I must be the odd one out. Watching on a 1080p 50 inch TV and a Chromecast (ultra?). I didn't notice anything untoward, and I think I am the sort of person who normally would. But I was also eating dinner at the same time so 🤷‍♂️

I also had a few artifacts here and there on the laptop at 1080p native and YT's 1080p enhanced bitrate. Nothing too distracting - the Tormek's plastic switch covers were slightly jaggy on the angle. Nothing to complain about mind you, just a 'huh that's interesting' and a check of my bitrate settings in Youtube. I just figured one of the encoding steps along the way had done it.

I absolutely had some aliasing on the tormek video (on youtube 1080p "enhanced bitrate" - enough that I actually went looking for comments about it before finding this thread. It looked like old interlaced video or something. I'm always curious about people's production pipelines

Thanks all. I think I turn too many knobs at the same time. For context (if it helps?) I film 1080/24. SOME shots where I know I want a good zoom i'll film 4k/24. That lets me 2x zoom and still be 1080 (I think). I'm thinking maybe the mixed 1080/4k timeline is what's doing it. I used to just switch to a macro lens, lol. On top of that, after export, I run it through Handbrake. So I'm not uploading 8GB videos. I think my settings match my source. The only thing I notice on the YT side is sometimes it lists it at 24 fps, sometimes 25, sometimes 30. I might have to take a few thou off my SD cards on the surface grinder?

Watched it on 100" 4K projector with 1080P premium selected. I have to say you got good looking fingerprints and knuckle hair. I wasn't looking for anything specific, so it was enjoyable. And I didn't catch any "artifacts "

I usually watch it on a normal PC-screen... I think any artifacts people see on bigger screens may come from interpretation (upscaling etc.) of the footage, done by the tv... But yeah, when watching closely I could also find some artefacts 1:58 for example... (pulsating edge) As far as I know, YT does it's own compression/conversion on top of every artefact you built in due to messing around with bitrate settings. When we render things out for our customer, who posts the stuff on YT etc. we use CBR (constant bit rate) at a fairly high number (30Mbit/s)... this ensures, that hardly any artefacts come from our side (as we include artificial grain etc. which gets destroyed by compression pretty fast) As you often have stop-trick kind of shots in your videos, compression that tries to spot the difference from one frame to another (vbr), may produce artifacts even more. Nevertheless, as an more or less "professional" I didn't spot any difference in quality at first watch, without you pointing it out. ;o)

On the tormek video shots that showed the threads definitely had some weird artifacting that felt like some kind of sharpening pulsing in and out watching on a 65" 4k TCL

For me, it looks like 720p being upscaled. Watching on a 1080p 42" sitting far too close, the jagged edges are very visible. Specifically the Tormek video. Xyla's tools looks good.

My two cent observations... I can't get the Tormek in anything higher than HD, so I can't make a fair comparison between my 40" HD TV and my 27" 4K monitor, but I have compared other creators' videos side by side at native resolution for each of my screens. That said, it's clear that TVs have a lot of built-in image filtering turned on by default, so two same-size TVs from different manufacturers are going to display video very differently. In general, I've observed that TVs tend to have much higher contrast (making for a more 3D image), they have motion blurring that minimizes choppiness in some scenes, and more compressed colors which often make high tones look blown out and low tones compress into black. In my experience it's really tough to get a TV to look neutral like a monitor does, so the starting point is going to be much different when editing for TV, especially considering how different the factory settings are going to be across the TV industry.

Watch on a 1080p LCD. Did you do something funny with the framerate on the spinning bit in the lathe? Seems like it was a cartoony 10fps while everything else was smooth. Kinda looked cool.

Watched the video on two tvs. A 65 inch Bravia (oled) and a 65 cheap (lcd) Onn. There are some differences, notably the contrast. Hands seem a little overexposed and some grains in the background on the cheap TV. Youtube premium on both tvs.

Watched the Torkmek video on a 60” plasma on TY premium birate, didn’t notice any sort of difference compared to the other videos.

Can confirm it was not quite right. Lots of ‘mosquito’ noise frame to frame, and diagonal lines very jagged. It’s almost as if it had been interlaced and then badly de-interlaced using a simple algorithm. Not something I’ve ever noticed on your videos before.

To me it looks like some kind of sharpening filter was applied, and there are sharpening artifacts. I've seen that come from a setting on the camera. This especially makes the threads look weird, or diagonal lines with high contrast look jagged, like others have mentioned.

No complaints on 4k display and youtube premium. A little disturbing seeing Xyla's hair folicles in the casting, though. 😅

Watching the last two videos, and comparing against the butt clamps video, with YT premium 1080p bitrate on a 55” LG OLED, via the Apple TV YouTube app: it’s all sharp, but maybe focus got off in a few places? But what I did notice is that when you cut in for closeups I can easily see the jagged edges of the lower resolution. And I’m also seeing moire patterns in stuff like threads, so things are sharp (sharper than the 1080p resolution, but maybe that ends up not looking as good?

Yep. Looks good. Nice and sharp. The hand closeups are near overexposed, especially with the chisels in view. Blacks are deep, but detailed (Tormach in focus, and black cases in the background have detail). Scratches on the work bench, grains on the grinding disks all look nice. I'd say it looks pretty well like a classic ToT joint. 55" Samsung at factory defaults.

Looks sharp on 65 inches but I saw some jaggies on diagonal edges, and fast motions looked off. But that might just be because I was looking for it. I'll have to go watch all your old videos over again to double check

On an 86" LG 4K TV on the 1080p "Enhanced" bitrate stream, I noticed some issues on the threading sections and on the close-ups on the edges of the gasket scrapers. Felt a bit "chunky", if that makes sense.

I just watched your latest two videos on my 4k 27" computer monitor. I didn't notice anything on the maker santa one, but on the Tormek one there were parts where some things were not as sharp. I also saw interesting video artifacts, specifically at edges of objects. Best example is the last 25 seconds of the video as you are doing your outro. The tormek adjustment nut, your 3D printed tool for rounded chisels, and the wedge on the hammer handle are shifting up and down on a consistent 3 - 4 times a second.

I try to make sure to watch on the living room TV. Not a big screen by modern standards, though. Fourty-something inches, but HDR 4k, and I use Apple TV 4k, and YouTube Premium. Will report back status on the latest videos

I actually jumped back and checked the quality settings. It was the clip showing off the gasket scrapers, and some of the threads on wider shots looked funny. 65" using a Nvidia Shield Pro.

Always on big screen. Looked pretty good. The grease onto the fist had realistic lustre and shine, could almost feel the slippery stickiness. And the hyper-realistic trim nail in the toolbox just blew me away. Great flick mate 🇦🇺

Yep, I watch from my living room tv (specifically the youtube app on a 4k apple tv hooked up to an LG 65" 4k OLED, if the tech setup is of any value). No quality issues popped out at me in the "Handsome" video. I'm about 4min into the Tormek vid. now and only one thing stuck out to me so far... at time 1:58, the digital-zoom in on the scraper edges has a pretty noticeable horizontal artifact. Almost looks like transcoded interlacing. Maybe it's normal for digital zoom on 1080p videos, haven't tried comparing anything else to check. Edit: I have yt premium, and have confirmed I'm watching with the "1080p Enhanced Bitrate (Premium)" setting. Edit2: Yeah, the quality is worse than normal. The horizontal "bad interlacing-like" artifact is noticeable without digital zoom. The zoom at 1:58 just makes it much larger, almost like it was present prior to render (e.g. not caused by the final render). It's easiest to notice on high-contrast angled edges (such as the thin shiny toolholder edges against the darker bench at 5:33).

YouTube can deliver 4K or even 8K, more than the 1080P this Xyla present video has. (Patreon limits to 1080 so I'll watch Kurtis at CEE work his magic on YT as long as Karen drops them there too)

Part of the issue is that Youtube locks the "high bitrate" verson behind premium. Common trick to get better encoding on Youtube is to upsvale your video to 4k and upload it, and they allocate more bits to the video. Easy to do with FFMPEG if you cant export that way in your video editor

I am on a 38in 2K IPS curved display, looks great! Was actually gonna request a 21:10 aspect 😉 haha Edit: some of the machining clips aren't the best, and weren't the prettiest. But the rest of the video was crisp clear on my monitor.
