As an adoptee it made me sad to hear Alex so defensive of adoption without really understanding where Kay is coming from or the perspectives of adoptees. As an adoptee it sucked to have my favorite podcast hash this out that way. I know no I'll intent was had I just wish Alex had been more open to learning about vast adoptee perspectives.

I have kind of the opposite opinion of Kay where I actually think it’s incredibly morally dubious to do fertility treatments or surrogacy. My reasoning is kind of similar to Kay’s where it’s like… y’all are spending so much fucking money and resources just to procreate rather than giving a child w out parents a loving home. It’s always seemed kind of self righteous and weird to me that ppl just NEED to have a newborn that’s blood related to them in some way. I think this mindset comes from a POV that your kid is an extension of you rather than a separate entity/person, which is worrisome. Borrowing from Kay’s point that ppl who do this are more interested in their desire to possess a child rather than actually providing a home for a child (breeding v shelter) I also really detest when ppl say ‘I couldn’t love a child the same if it was adopted or not actually related to me’ like I think that’s kind of extremely wack and a little psychotic. This is just my own opinion that I know is a bit flawed, cause the farther I get into it the farther I tread into anti-Natalist territory which I know is still pretty taboo in most circles.

im not very close with either of my cousins but they're both adopted (by my straight aunt and uncle). one of them (white) has reconnected wonderfully with her birth family, and speaks openly on social media about being extremely grateful for adoption and her two families. my chinese-born cousin most likely adopted due to the one child policy, i am less confident in her positive opinion on the matter.

The adoption talk reminds me of a adoptee tiktoker (whom I can't remember sorry) who was branded "controversial". She would talk about how people don't deserve and are not entitled to children just because they can't have them. She would also talk about how the feelings of prospective parents are traditionally the main or only motive for adoption, rather than the feelings/ well being the the child
