Year 300 AC
Near Winterfell, The North
The Vale army pressed north through frozen mud that sucked at their horses' hooves, as Sansa pulled her fur-lined cloak tighter against the bitter wind, her breath misting in the morning air. Every league brought them closer to Winterfell, closer to Jon, closer to answers about his impossible gamble against the Boltons.
Four thousand men against nine thousand. The numbers haunted her thoughts. She'd learned enough from watching Littlefinger to know that battles weren't won by courage alone. What are you thinking, Jon?
"My lady!" A scout's voice cut through the steady clatter of armor and weapons. "Riders approaching!"
The column ground to a halt. Sansa's mare shifted nervously beneath her as Bronze Yohn Royce guided his destrier alongside. His weathered face showed the same skepticism that had marked it since they'd learned of Jon's march on Winterfell.
"How many?" Royce demanded.
"Twenty-two, my lord. They claim to be northmen from Jon Snow's army."
Sansa's heart lurched. Survivors? Messengers? Or something worse?
One of the Vale scouts who'd ridden ahead pushed through the press of knights. "My lady, Lord Royce—they're led by Robett Glover and someone called Larence Snow. They insist on speaking with Lady Sansa."
"Could be a trap," muttered Ser Symond Templeton, his hand moving to his sword hilt. "Bolton men pretending to be Stark loyalists."
"Or they're here to beg our help," suggested Lord Belmore with a sneer. "The Bastard's folly has likely cost him dear."
Bronze Yohn's grey eyes narrowed, studying the horizon where dark figures approached. "Let them through. But keep weapons ready."
The Vale knights parted reluctantly, creating a corridor through which the northmen rode. Sansa recognized Robett Glover immediately—she'd seen him at Winterfell during happier times, before the world had torn itself apart. The young man beside him must be Larence Snow, lean and watchful with the bearing of someone who'd seen too much too young.
They dismounted and came straight toward her, ignoring the suspicious glares of the Vale lords. Relief washed across Robett's craggy features as he dropped to one knee in the mud.
"Thank the gods you're safe and sound, Lady Sansa."
The words made no sense. She'd expected desperation, pleas for reinforcement, news of disaster. Not... relief?
Larence Snow's jaw tightened as he surveyed the Vale forces. "There would have been seven hells to pay if you weren't."
"What are you talking about?" Bronze Yohn's voice carried the authority of decades commanding men. "What of Jon Snow and his army? Does he yet live?"
Robett rose slowly, mud caking his knees. He glanced at the assembled Vale lords, then back to Sansa. "The war is over, my lady. Lord Snow has taken Winterfell."
The words hung in the frigid air like ice crystals, impossible and glittering.
"Taken Winterfell?" Lord Belmore scoffed. "With four thousand men against Bolton's nine? Do you take us for fools?"
Robett looked back at Larence, who shrugged with the casual indifference of someone who'd expected disbelief. "Told you they wouldn't believe it."
"We had a larger force than it appeared," Robett said carefully, his eyes never leaving Sansa's face. "Lord Snow split the army. Used deception to draw Bolton out."
"Brilliant." Bronze Yohn's approval rang genuine, though his eyes remained sharp. "To divide his forces and still achieve victory—your Lord Snow has a strategist's mind. Few commanders would risk such a bold gambit."
Robett's mouth opened, then closed. He shot another glance at Larence before responding. "...Yes. Lord Snow's strategy was... most effective."
The hesitation was subtle, but Sansa had spent too long in Littlefinger's shadow not to recognize evasion. These men were hiding something. Her fingers tightened on her reins.
"What aren't you telling us, Lord Glover?"
Robett's weathered face remained carefully neutral. "Lord Snow will answer all your questions, my lady. We're to escort you to Winterfell. He's waiting for you."
"Hmm. This could still be a trap," Bronze Yohn warned, his hand drifting toward his sword. "The Boltons could have forced these men to—"
A commotion erupted among the soldiers. Steel rang as swords cleared sheaths. The northern warriors moved with practiced speed, forming a protective circle around something Sansa couldn't see. Her mare danced sideways, whinnying in alarm.
Then she saw it.
A white shadow emerged from the treeline, massive and silent as death itself. Red eyes gleamed in a face larger than any wolf had a right to be. The direwolf stood motionless, watching her with an intelligence that made her breath catch.
"Ghost," she whispered.
"Put your weapons away!" The command tore from her throat as she swung down from her saddle. "All of you, now!"
"My lady, no!" Bronze Yohn caught her arm. "That beast could—"
"That's my brother's direwolf." She pulled free, her eyes never leaving those crimson orbs. "Jon's wolf."
She walked forward slowly, her boots crunching through frost-brittle grass. Ghost padded closer, each step deliberate and measured. The Vale men shifted nervously behind her, but she barely heard them. This was Jon's shadow, his other half, his silent guardian. Just like Lady used to be.
Ghost stopped directly before her, close enough that his breath misted warm against her face. He'd grown even larger than she remembered—his head level with her chest, his shoulders broader than any natural wolf's. Yet when she raised a trembling hand to touch his fur, he pressed into her palm like the pup he'd once been.
"Oh, Ghost." The tears came without warning, hot against her frozen cheeks. She buried her face in his thick white ruff, breathing in the wild scent of pine and snow and home. "I've missed you so much."
His massive head turned, pressing against her shoulder in what felt impossibly like comfort. How many times had she seen Jon make this same gesture with his wolf? How many times had she envied their bond while Lady...
She pushed the thought away. Lady was gone. But Ghost was here, warm and real and alive, which meant Jon was too.
"Lord Snow is anxious to see you, my lady," Robett said gently. "He's been worried about your safety."
Sansa straightened, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. Ghost remained pressed against her side, a wall of warmth and protection.
"Then we shouldn't keep my brother waiting."
She looked back at Bronze Yohn and the Vale lords, seeing their mixture of awe and uncertainty. They'd follow her to Winterfell—she could see it in their faces. The appearance of the direwolf had done more to convince them than any words could have.
"We ride for Winterfell," she announced. "All of us."
As she remounted her mare, Ghost loped alongside, keeping pace with easy grace. Whatever secrets Jon was keeping, whatever impossible thing had happened at Winterfell, she would learn the truth soon enough.

Winterfell, The North
The broken towers of Winterfell rose against the grey sky like accusing fingers. Sansa's throat constricted as they crested the final hill, the castle spreading before them in all its ruined glory. The last time she'd seen these walls, they'd been whole, strong, sheltering a pack of wolves who thought themselves safe.
Now gaps yawned where stones had fallen. The First Keep remained a blackened shell—Bran's fall seemed a lifetime ago. The Guest House roof had partially collapsed, and the sept where her mother had prayed lay in rubble. Even from this distance, she could see where fire had licked the walls, leaving dark stains like old blood.
"Gods," she breathed, her mare shifting beneath her.
Ghost padded ahead, his white form stark against the muddy road. The direwolf showed no hesitation, no pause at the destruction. This was still home to him.
As they descended toward the castle, the ground itself told its own story. Great swaths of earth lay scorched black, the snow unable to cling to whatever had burned there.
"Look at this." Bronze Yohn reined up beside her, studying the blackened earth with a commander's eye. "I've seen bonfires, wildfire, burning pitch. None leave marks like these."
The scorched trails ran in deliberate lines, too precise for chaos, too extensive for normal fire. One patch stretched nearly fifty feet, the ground fused to glass at its center. Bodies had been cleared, but she could see where they'd fallen—shadows burned into the earth itself.
"What could have done this?" Lord Belmore muttered, his voice tight.
Robett Glover rode ahead without answering, his shoulders rigid. Whatever secret the northmen carried, it had left its mark on the very ground.
The gates of Winterfell stood open. No Bolton banners remained—instead, the direwolf of House Stark flew from every tower that still stood. Her heart hammered against her ribs as they passed beneath the portcullis, hooves clattering on worn stone.
The courtyard opened before her, and there he stood.
Jon.
He waited by the well, dressed in black leather and wool, his dark hair falling past his shoulders. But it was his height that struck her first—he stood taller than she remembered, no longer the sullen boy who'd avoid her.
Scars marked the left side of his face now, pale lines that caught the weak afternoon light. They started at his temple and carved down to his jaw—not sword cuts, but something else. Claw marks? The wounds looked fully healed and adding a wildness to features that had always been solemn.
Then he smiled.
Not the careful, guarded expression she remembered from their youth, but something genuine and warm that transformed his entire face. In that moment, with that smile lighting his grey eyes, she saw Father. The same quiet strength, the same unshakeable presence that had once made her feel safe in this world.
Her vision blurred. She was sliding from her saddle before conscious thought, her legs moving of their own accord. The courtyard, the watching soldiers, Bronze Yohn's startled call—all of it fell away.
"Jon!"
His arms opened wide, and she crashed into him, her face pressing against his chest as sobs tore from her throat. He smelled of leather and pine smoke, of home and safety and everything she'd lost. His arms wrapped around her, solid and real, and for the first time since Father's death, she felt truly protected.
"Sansa," he murmured against her hair, his voice deeper than she remembered but still unmistakably Jon. "You're safe now. You're home."
"I missed you." The words came broken between sobs. "I missed everyone. Father, Mother, Robb, Bran, Rickon, Arya—"
"I know." His arms tightened. "I know."
She clung to him, this brother who'd always stood apart, who'd eaten in the hall but never quite belonged. The bastard who'd loved them all despite the distance Lady Catelyn had enforced. How foolish that seemed now, how petty and small. He was her brother, her pack, her family.
Ghost pressed against her side, completing the embrace. The warmth of them both—Jon and his wolf—thawed something frozen inside her chest.
Finally, reluctantly, she stepped back, wiping her cheeks with shaking hands. The courtyard had filled with people—northern soldiers, Wildlings in their strange furs, men bearing the strange sigil of Stannis Baratheon. Something was wrong.
Sansa felt it in the way the northern soldiers shifted their weight, boots scraping against frost-slicked stone. The Wildlings watched her with an intensity that went beyond curiosity—their eyes tracking between her and Jon like they were measuring distances. Even the men bearing Stannis's men held themselves too carefully, hands never straying far from sword hilts despite the supposed safety of Winterfell's walls.
They're afraid, she realized with a jolt. But not of the Vale.
Only a handful seemed immune to whatever tension gripped the courtyard. A bearded man stood near the armory door, his broad face split in a genuine grin as he watched their reunion. Beside him, a slender youth with dark eyes—pretty enough to be a girl—observed with quiet satisfaction. The red priestess's ruby pulsed at her throat as she studied Sansa with an expression that might have been approval. And near the gates, a massive Wildling with a white beard that cascaded over his barrel chest actually chuckled, nudging a blonde woman whose beauty seemed carved from winter itself. The woman look at them but mostly at Jon fondly.
What happened here? What aren't they telling me?
Jon's hand lingered on her shoulder for a moment before he turned to address the Vale lords who'd dismounted behind her.
"Lord Royce." Jon inclined his head with the gravity of a lord, not a bastard. "My thanks for bringing my sister safely home. You and your men are welcome at Winterfell. Whatever hospitality we can offer is yours."
Bronze Yohn studied Jon with sharp eyes, taking in the scars, the bearing, the way hardened northern warriors deferred to him without question.
"Lord Commander. We've heard remarkable tales of your victory here."
Jon's expression revealed nothing. "War makes many remarkable tales, my lord. Most grow in the telling."
"Indeed." Bronze Yohn's gaze drifted to the scorched earth visible through the gates. "Though some evidence suggests the tales might fall short of truth."
A moment of tension stretched between them before Jon gestured toward the Great Hall.
"You've ridden hard from the Vale. Please, let my people see to your men. There's food and warm fires waiting. We'll speak properly once you've rested."
He turned back to Sansa, his grey eyes soft with concern. She noticed then how tired he looked beneath the joy of reunion, a tension in his shoulders that spoke of carrying the world's burdens.
"You should rest too," he said quietly. "Your old chambers have been prepared. We'll share a proper meal tonight, just us. There's much to discuss."
She wanted to protest, to demand answers about the scorched earth, about how the Wildlings willingly follow him, about the strange way the northmen looked at him with something between awe and fear. But exhaustion weighed on her bones, and the promise of her own chambers—her actual chambers, not some borrowed room in someone else's castle—pulled at her.
"Tonight then," she agreed.
Jon squeezed her hand once before releasing it. As servants approached to lead her inside, she glanced back to find him still watching her, as if assuring himself she was real.
Ghost followed her into the castle, padding silently at her heels. Whatever secrets Jon harbored, whatever impossible thing had happened here, she would learn it all tonight. For now, she was home.
The word felt strange on her tongue, foreign after so much loss. But as she climbed the familiar stairs to her chambers, her fingers trailing along stone walls she'd touched a thousand times as a girl, she let herself believe it might be true.
She was home, and Jon—scarred, changed, keeping secrets—had made it possible.

Jon stood in the lord's solar watching servants arrange platters of roasted capon and winter vegetables on the small table by the hearth. The room felt wrong without Ned Stark's presence, like wearing boots that belonged to a dead man. Every corner held ghosts: the chair where Father had sat reading ravens, the shelf where he'd kept his seal, the window where he'd stood watching his children train in the yard below.
The fire crackled, casting dancing shadows across stone walls that had witnessed generations of Stark lords making decisions that shaped the North. Jon's fingers traced the pommel of Longclaw, finding comfort in the worn leather grip. The Valyrian steel seemed to hum against his palm, a reminder of all he'd become since leaving this place as a bastard.
Sansa entered wearing a gown of Stark grey, her auburn hair catching the firelight like burnished copper. She moved with the grace Lady Catelyn had tried to teach her daughters, but there was steel beneath the silk now. The girl who'd dreamed of songs and southern knights had been burned away, leaving something harder in her place.
"You kept Father's things exactly as they were." Her voice carried wonder and pain in equal measure.
"I haven't had time to change anything." Jon pulled out her chair, a gesture that made her pause. "Besides, they're not mine to change."
She sat, studying him with those Tully blue eyes that saw too much. "You're different."
"We both are."
The servants finished arranging the meal and departed, leaving them alone with their ghosts. Jon poured wine—a sweet Arbor gold he'd found in the castle stores, remembering how Sansa had always preferred sweet things. His own cup remained empty.
"Tell me," he said, cutting into the capon with precise movements. "Everything that happened after... after King's Landing. If you're comfortable speaking of it."
Sansa's hand trembled slightly as she reached for her wine. "Comfortable." She tested the word like foreign currency. "I don't think I'll ever be comfortable with any of it."
Jon waited, watching the firelight play across her face. She'd grown beautiful in the way of northern women—not the soft beauty she'd once craved, but something that could weather storms.
"They made me watch." Her voice dropped to barely above a whisper. "When they took Father's head. Joffrey said it would teach me loyalty." A bitter laugh escaped her. "It did, in a way. It taught me that loyalty to monsters only feeds them."
"They beat me." Sansa continued, her fingers unconsciously moving to her back where Jon knew scars must lie. "Ser Meryn, mostly. Sometimes others. Always where the bruises wouldn't show. Joffrey liked to watch that too. Called it 'teaching me my place.'"
Jon's hand clenched around his knife. The metal groaned, beginning to bend.
The dragon stirred beneath Jon's skin, scales rippling just below the surface. His vision sharpened, the edges of everything becoming too clear, too bright. He forced his breathing to slow, counting heartbeats until the fire in his chest banked to embers.
"The Hound stopped them sometimes. And Tyrion, when he could. Small kindnesses in an ocean of cruelty." She took another sip of wine. "Do you know what the worst part was?"
He shook his head, not trusting his voice.
"I thanked them. Every time they hurt me, I thanked them for the lesson. I smiled and curtsied and played the perfect lady because I thought if I was good enough, sweet enough, proper enough, they might stop." Her laugh held broken glass. "Lady died because I was a stupid girl who wanted to be queen. Father died because I told Cersei his plans. Mother and Robb died while I was playing dress-up with the people who murdered them."
"Sansa—"
"No." She met his eyes, and he saw the wolf there, finally. "I need to say this. I need you to know what I was, so you can understand what I've become."
Jon nodded, setting down the bent knife before she noticed.
"After Joffrey's wedding, when he died—" A ghost of a smile touched her lips. "I ran. Littlefinger had a ship waiting. I didn't know it was him at first, thought I was being rescued. Another song, another lie. He took me to the Vale, to my Aunt Lysa."
She described the Eyrie, her aunt's madness, the Moon Door's hungry mouth always waiting. How Littlefinger had pushed Lysa through it, then comforted Sansa while her aunt's blood still colored the snow far below.
"He made me pretend to be his bastard daughter. Alayne Stone." The name came out like spoiled meat. "Taught me to lie with every breath, to smile while calculating how to use people's weaknesses against them. He said he was protecting me, teaching me. What he was doing was trying to make me into something he could possess."
The fire popped, sending sparks up the chimney. Jon realized his skin was radiating heat, the air around him shimmering like summer road stones.
"He wanted to own me." Sansa's voice went flat. "Everything he did, everything he said..." She stopped, jaw working. "I learned to be elsewhere when he was around."
"I'll kill him." The words came out in a growl that belonged more to beast than man.
"He's already gone. Fled when I revealed myself to Robert Arryn." She reached across the table then, her cool fingers wrapping around his wrist. The touch anchored him, pulled him back from the edge where dragon waited. "Jon, I need to say something."
He turned his hand palm up, carefully closing his fingers around hers. Her bones felt fragile as bird wings.
"I'm sorry." The words tumbled out in a rush. "For how I treated you when we were children. For calling you half-brother. For keeping my distance because Mother said I should. You were just a boy who wanted a family, and I..." Her voice cracked. "I was cruel."
Jon's first instinct was to pull away, to deflect with the same careful distance he'd maintained all those years. His shoulders tensed, grey eyes sliding toward the fire. The muscle in his jaw jumped as he ground his teeth against words trained never to escape.
"You were a child. We both were."
But his free hand betrayed him, fingers flexing unconsciously the way they did when Longclaw wasn't there to grip. Sansa's apology had found the exact spot where he'd built his thickest walls, the place where a bastard boy had learned to expect nothing and be grateful for scraps.
"I used to watch you in the yard with Jeyne Poole." The confession scraped out rough, surprising them both. "You'd laugh at something she said, and I'd wonder what it was like... to belong somewhere without question. To know your place wasn't a grudging allowance but a birthright."
His throat worked, swallowing something that tasted of old pain and dragon fire.
"We're here now. That's what matters."
Sansa squeezed his hand, recognizing the deflection but wise enough not to push. Not yet.
"Tell me about the Night's Watch. Why did you let the wildlings through?"
Jon released her hand slowly, grateful for safer ground. "Because winter is coming, and with it something worse than wildlings. The Long Night, Sansa. The real one."
He described Hardhome, the army of the dead, the Others with their ice spiders and cold that could freeze a man's blood in his veins.
Sansa's laugh came out sharp as breaking glass. "The dead walking? Jon, you sound like Old Nan after too much wine."
"I watched them tear apart living men at Hardhome." His voice dropped to something rougher than a whisper. "Watched them rise again with blue eyes and serve the thing that killed them."
Her smile died. The morning light through the window caught the doubt creeping across her features, the way her fingers found the table's edge for support.
"You're serious."
"There's one in the dungeons." Jon stared at the burning wood. "The guards know to expect you."
He kept his own transformation from the telling, though he saw her noting each careful omission.
"We need every living soul we can gather. Wildling, northman, southron—the dead don't care about our boundaries." He pushed back from the table. "Which is why I'm leaving for Torrhen's Square today."
"Today?" Sansa stood so quickly her chair scraped against stone. "You just took Winterfell. The lords need to see you, to—"
"The ironborn still hold Torrhen's Square. Every day they remain is another day the North bleeds." He moved toward the door. "The lords can wait."
"Then let me send the Vale forces with you. They can help you repel the Ironborn."
Jon's grin held something wild. "No need."
He strode into the courtyard, Sansa hurrying to keep pace. The space was packed with activity with northern soldiers preparing weapons, Free Folk checking supplies, horses being saddled. But Jon walked past all of it toward a strange wooden platform near the gates, thick ropes coiled beside it like sleeping snakes.
"Jon, please. Take some of our men at least, please!"
She stopped mid-sentence. The platform wasn't just wood—it was a boat-shaped barge, reinforced with iron bands. Thirty northern soldiers stood nearby armored to the teeth, their faces grim but determined.
"Ghost will stay with you." Jon turned to face her, and she gasped. His eyes held flecks of purple now, like twilight bleeding into grey sky. "Val, Tormund, and Ser Davos will ensure your safety. Trust them."
"Jon, what—"
Bronze Yohn emerged from the keep, several Vale lords behind him. "Lord Snow, what is the meaning of this?"
Jon was already walking toward the cleared ground beyond the gates. "Stay back, Sansa."
Maege Mormont appeared at Sansa's shoulder, the older woman's presence solid as mountain stone. "Trust him, girl. And step back."
Jon reached the clearing and turned to face the assembled crowd. His voice carried across the courtyard with impossible clarity.
"Lords and ladies of the North and Vale. I leave my sister in your protection. Guard her well."
Violet flames erupted from nothing, consuming Jon's form in an inferno that sent horses screaming and men stumbling backward. But the flames didn't spread, didn't burn—they transformed.
Where Jon Snow had stood, a dragon now towered. Black as winter night, scales that seemed to swallow light, eyes like molten garnets.
The dragon's head swiveled toward the barge, and one massive claw reached out, grasping the reinforced ropes. With a movement that looked effortless, the dragon lifted the barge full of soldiers into the air.
"KEEP HER SAFE."
The voice boomed from the dragon's throat, still recognizably Jon beneath the inhuman resonance. Then with a beat of wings that flattened everyone in the courtyard, the dragon launched skyward, the barge dangling below like a toy.
Sansa's knees gave out. The world tilted, stone rushing up to meet her, and then—
Nothing.

To be honest, I could totally see him doing this to Arya too. Only with Arya, he’d also know she wouldn’t let him get away with it and he’ll be expecting a punch in the gut when he returns XD

Please never feel bad about an honest criticism. Show Jon wouldn't do it but book Jon would, if just being a little impish. You have to remember what kind of person Sansa that Jon remembers, as they were never close, at all. I don't know why the show made it seem like their past didn't matter when they met up but they legit never had an interaction. (Also thought it would fit Jon's dark sense of humor lol)

I'm sorry to say this but I don't like the second part of this chapter. Jon and Sansa's reunion, and thier discussion of the past were perfect, I absolutely loved that. But I just can't accept that Jon would choose to show Sansa (and Rhoyce) his Dragon form in such a frivolous way, and then just fly off with out explanation. Last chapter he went to lengths to make sure that Sansa (and the Vale lords) wouldn't hear about his ability from others. I had assumed he did this so he could control when and how they learned about his ability and help mitigate concerns and fears they would have. This feels too much like he dropped the mother of all bombshell on the this traumatized young woman, and then just abandoned her. Not to mention the Vale lords and what affect this will have on them. He didnt even tell her about Rickon, Bran, and Arya's survival (though explaining the last two might be difficult). I hope this doesn't hurt your feelings, because I am truly invested in this story and love the story so far. Please continue you great work!
