Thank you, I'm glad you liked the way the chapter came together, as I needed to go through my notes over and over to make sure I didn't miss something important. Hudson will need some time to recover, but he'll have the perfect 'nurse' to look out for him. Watkins is a matter that will be addressed in the following chapter, but I don't think he'd be carving turkeys anytime soon. Jackie won't feel inclined to share any fun family gatherings with him, either, lol! Although the picture you created was funny, like in a dark humor kind of way. To answer your last question, yes, that is what Otis hears during those scenes.

Ken Pilcher

I appreciated a lot of how you plotted this out. I figured Keres would have a trick up his sleeve to take down Hudson. And I really appreciate through his whole ordeal (from kidnapping on) how Otis used the mom-induced trauma memories to help him keep perspective — even when he froze up for a couple of chapters — and how finishing the memory made him ready to react in the here and now. I feel no sympathy for Angel. Frankly, Hudson got off with less damage than I expected. So did Jackie, at least up til now. Watkins is still out there, but I doubt he’ll be sad to hear Keres is gone. I can picture fun family gatherings in their future. Jackie brings the potato salad. Watkins carves the turkey. I’m assuming the Ra-tat-ta-ta sound Otis hears represents the gun battle outside?

In all honesty, when I started this story, it wasn't supposed to be this dark... But as I progressed and got in touch with Otis's character more and more, exploring his background and whys, I realized that he was starting to shine brighter and brighter. And, like in a painting, for the subject matter to appear in all the glory, I needed to make the background darker and darker. This also goes to prove that I don't exactly control the stories and characters I write with a firm hand - as I talked to Dave about it, he also agreed that, in the end, this story will actually have a different name - which I'll reveal when the book is ready. Also, trust me that it wasn't easy for me either to write the darker undertones and scenes, but this story simply demanded it out of me. My Otis in a Rembrandt painting, but with an underlying of Hieronymus Bosch - which I hope makes sense :)

Wow Laura... I have to admit... this story has been tough for me to read. Not that it is bad or anything, but I don't like stories about monsters... the monsters the human beings can be... under horrible circumstances. While I have been mesmerized by your story line I was often left sick to my stomach learning about a seedy / sexual underbelly of society. I recognized the evil in Keres long before we got the details of his backstory... and by the definition of the word Sociopath, he recognized no rules that bind him. I am glad that Hudson and Otis are ok (at this point of the story) and that Jackie has the possibility of being redeemed. I feel like a moth drawn to a flame when I see you publish a new chapter. Very good writing, I am just sorry that I have trouble with facing the evil, hatred, and hurt that lurks in some men's hearts.
