Thaabit Rivertree

Ragnarok just sprung this on her with no time to research these guys... how could she possibly know? Plus she said it could really help people... is Ragnarok a closet racist/transformist? Damn, what a cold move. Just dumping those problems on her. Nestra might have just seriously influenced their perception of her and transformers in general, for the negative, and it feels like Ragnarok set her up.

Raven

Religious, and given their focus, Christian radical extremists from America looking for justification for their beliefs to reopen American concentration camps. But as the others said, also new.

Raven

Annihilation of those two would be considered helping humanity maybe?

Sgt. Tibs

Ragnarok said this research could "really help people" and now she's saying she always knew they were racists and she thought Nestra knew? Sounds like she just forced Nestra's hand then waved away any complaints. Now these guys are going to fuck with Nestra. Fuck Ragnarok. Team Shinran.

ItWasIDIO!!

Well that's a new problem I didn't see coming

AntiClimax she her

...translating that to French yields "jeu d'adresse". Looking up the meaning of that yields "game of skill". Which makes *way* more sense than what I originally assumed, before shrugging and moving on. So, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but in context this is just party games? I translated this page from wikipedia as well. https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeu_d%27adresse So includes shuffleboard. Huh. Edit: Seems i to be more dexterity than skill. Would likely include (for USicans) darts, corn hole, lawn darts, etc. Wonder if billiards would be included?

Pete Magnuson

What the heck is a "game of address"? Idk the term and google isn't providing an obvious answer

The Bandersnatch

Oh yeah, you're quite right. I understand why he is behaving this way, but I don't like it or agree with it lol. I appreciate the nuance Mec gives us with these flawed characters <3

gray matter

This is true, it’s also been stated that her mom and dad haven’t really been the same since she left. It’s not uncommon for the kid that stays to blame the “errant child” for his parent’s problems. Nestra not being a gleam while them are is close to your child dying… few relationships survive that and Ulysses’ has someone to actively blame in the matter. Not saying he’s right to blame her just that is what happens a lot of the time

Enkelados

He is obviously an ass. But honestly we don't really know if he actually has a point. Maybe transforming gleams are actually more unstable and dangerous.

Unwillingmainer

Damn, so I've spend the last 48 reading this entire story instead of other important things, like work and sleep, and this is a fucking great story. Fucking love it. I love Bob and I now see your other work is just as good if not better. Great stuff man.

Leviathon251

Please theological purge arc. I hate those guys already

Conviter

remember she isnt even close to the ceiling of C rank in her true form yet, and can almost match up to weak B ranks. i dont think any traditional ceiling like that will apply to her

Exandra

According to Google, Hallon means raspberry, not strawberry. And yes, I searched for a recipe. :)

Andrew K

Yeah, trips to Shinran's facility are definitely going to get trickier to schedule no matter what. And the promotion kind of implies she'll likely be getting some sort of relatively regular police assignment again soonish (unless she quits), plus there will likely still be stray non-raiding jobs for her Crescent personality from Ragnarok. She's going to have enough going on that there's probably going to have to be a significant plot point sooner or later about not having enough time for everything and needing to cut back somewhere, or else risk exposing her secret just from simple fatigue-induced sloppiness. Maybe human gleamhood plus connections resulting in an indefinite sabbatical from the police (rather than outright quitting) except when they have something going on that they think she's particularly valuable for?

gray matter

No his entire species is a hiding species. He would’ve never told Shinran if he would not have found out on his own… granted they are an elite predator species…. It’s just been explained that they learn and love their adopted species culture. That’s why he’s there to stop A ranks and science to keep her from getting wrecked

Simon Hoerder

Which is why I assumed Aunt Claire would be coming with her. But apparently it’s rather difficult for the powerhouses to move around without causing diplomatic incidents and they are treating both the procedure and Zurich itself as save. The text doesn’t feel as if they’re worried. Also, they let her live on her own and join MaxSec before. Not exactly the safest of safe job. I bet the raiding and being B-Ranks has shifted their risk perception.

Jamarr

It was also weird to me that Ragnarok referred to her Masked persona as her 'true form' when she arrives at the enclave. To me it seems almost like Ragnarok knows but Nestra doesn't realize. However if that were the case, I'd expect Nestra to have some suspicions by now.

Aifhwinx

@andrew i'd lean towards the 'good for threshold = good for humanity' take from Ragnarok, she recently talked about tapping into the oppressed within the sword-king enclave too. i'd hope she's not that callous but well....

Clifton

Major medical procedure and transport over hostile terrain? Seems unlikely her family would send her unescorted.

Aifhwinx

a new (to us) faction that seems to be taking first-gen monster hate to an extreme and hating gleams that even look like monsters

Clifton

Hmm, on second read, that looks like a flag.

Clifton

My understanding was Sereth told Shinran not because he could be found out but because he was the top and could limit others investigations into mysterious activities that could link back to Nestra.

The Bandersnatch

“I don’t despise you because you were a drab, though it didn’t help." Yeah no, Ulysses is an arrogant ass with a superiority complex who has 0 empathy for Nestra's position. She's admitted that when she was hurting she didn't behave the best and apologised and he's just being a giant twat.

Manlor

Triple raiding all day! Plus her special training in the facility. She's going to need to eat a lot!

Peeples

All the foreshadowing is killing me

gray matter

A couple other things, this is the coldest we’ve seen Ragnarok towards Nestra. She could’ve noticed something before and then put more together later, especially with a request for help getting to Zurich for a core transplant if she thought Nestra was able to hide her core previously. This is also the first time Ragnarok acknowledges her transformation power as Nestra being a Demon I believe. She may know and she is an old monster with prejudice, maybe she’s trying to work through it since she likes Nestra or maybe not. With this situation though she may be putting Nestra in Daniel’s sight in order to put him in the sights of the strongest being on Earth. If Daniels goes after her blood that one zealot down

Andrew K

Assuming it's not simply that she agrees with them, I can think of two options that could be an explanation (for a sufficiently cold blooded leader, which it certainly seems she can be). One is if she's hoping to give them just enough ammo to overreach far enough that the backlash neutralizes them for a long time - would be tough on the victims in the short term, but could be viewed as better in the long run rather than letting the situation fester. The other is that she's of the opinion that basically anything good for Threshold's position is good for humanity, and sees an opportunity to pick up power by being the preferred refuge for people with transformation powers who are oppressed elsewhere.

Andrew K

If her Aszhii side being so far ahead makes her human side advance faster, might even get more complicated than that - she might have to invent a second masked gleam identity for her family to discover as an explanation for the excess advancement rate (and put enough effort into it that it's not obviously fake).

gray matter

There are cases of multiple cores. Like the serial killer. Her situation could be different; however, I thought Ragnarok would learn what she was once she hit A-rank either through her domain directly or because she would now notice Sareth. There was a reason Sareth told Shinran. For this I also thought Shinran knew she was Aszhii idk why she put him in the other list. When she was talking to him the first time asking why he was helping her he mentions she was still a protector of humanity and humanity needs all the help it can get. In fact doesn’t Sareth specifically state Shinran knows if front of Nestra in his confrontation with Mazingwe and then Mazingwe says he will double check that with Shinran.

Adspartan

He knows she's not human but he doesn't know her human identity (it's mentioned in chapter 45)

Vincebourgh

I don't get what Ragnarok meant by Crescent "helping humanity". How would giving these fucks more ammo for their ghetto plan help anyone worth helping?

DAK

Pretty sure Shinran knows. At the least he got curb stomped by an Aszhii for even asking Nestra questions.

DAK

Sadly, he would probably ride sunbeams to a happy landing on a well-lit mountain top.

Daemion

Perhaps she believes that Nestra can power up temporarily by consuming mana rich food and spending time close to or in portals but she's still leaking mana and will turn back into a human after a while. A core would stabilize her and allow her to stay in Crescent form for as long as she wants.

NoReTr3aT

New. I guess religious idiots.

Sergey Kadaner

A few months back it was the standard schedule.

DM

For me, I saw it as another example of Threshold government being pragmatic and amoral. Can’t turn down a request from an overseas jerk with clout? Find someone abrasive to comply with the letter of the request, and know the interview will be useless. But hey, we did what you asked. Nestra has been served a few helpings of bureacratic self serving risotto before!

Dan

Who are the Fundamentalists again?

Daemion

Yeah, that's not the last we've seen of Daniels. Unfortunately. I detest this kind of antagonist. The "everyone knows I'm an asshole but I always get away with it" kind. Also, doesn't Shinran know she's not human? Pretty sure this has been spelled out to him by both Seth and the training dimension/place. Getting healed with the core is going to be fun. Since she's an unique case any outcome will work for her. If she's stronger than expected, then no one will find it suspicious. I still hope that sometime in the future Nestra can safely come out to her parents and raid with them in her true form. Mostly because at some point Nestra will probably hit a ceiling she won't be able to overcome by herself and will require a team to survive B rank dungeons.

Jamarr

From Ch23 Ragnarok believes Nestra is a human with a transformation power. By analyzing her unique fighting style she discovers her identity. I was under the impression that Ragnarok believed that Nestra somehow fixed her core failure and didn't report it thus becoming a Masked gleam. If her core is still broken, thus the trip to Zurich, how does Ragnarok rationalize her already existing transformation power?

Daemion

If I had been in Nestra's situation, I would have left, too. She would have never been anything but a curiosity. Just one step above a beloved pet. Someone who exists in the same spaces but is not part of the same world. Gleams communicate faster, she would not be able to follow any conversations unless her family slows down for her. She would never have been able to join them on raids, she would have been an outsider the whole time. Even worse, she would be reminded of her (lack of) status every single minute she's with her family. Imagine your family was composed out of very talented and famous musicians but you're tone-deaf and struggle reading sheet music. You'd never exist in the same spheres as them, you couldn't be with them during work, you would always be a tagalong who doesn't contribute anything when the family goes on tour. At best you could perform as well as a servant... and even that would be questionable, considering that a family of B ranks can easily hire D and C ranks. On top of all of that, you'd always represent a weakness that enemies can exploit to get to your family. There's fuck all you can do when powerful gleams go after you. Nestra might as well print out a card so the kidnappers can stamp it, she'd get taken so often. Or even if it never gets that far, she's still be a weakness socially. People could always point at her and wonder what's wrong with the family to produce such a failure. Leaving and striking out on her own was the correct decision. She should have explained it to her family though.

Dragon Earth

I think he would have had to. The talk after would not be pleasant though.

Dragon Earth

Because she also knows that her civilian body doesn’t have a core and Nestra probably would have tried using her to get past the passport red tape.

Daemion

Probably not. He's not going to protect her from her own mistakes, just ward off things she couldn't deal with herself.

Anon

Wow. That was a total dick move by Ragnarok. She must know how apolitical Nestra is, and that she probably wouldn't know who Daniels is. Setting her up like that is scummy.

Denva

Because she also believes she is a demon. And her case is different for other transformation gleams that it could just be a temporary power boost.

Benjamin Mages

He has a point in that Nestra really did hurt her family when she left like that. However it's also obvious his point of view is biased. He refuses to acknowledge that if anything Nestra was the one hurt the most, and refuses to accept her attempt at reconnecting even when the rest of the family is, which makes me pretty sure that his actual attitude is rooted in some place away from what his supposed point is.

Manlor

So soon Nestra will have a public Gleam raiding identity and a masked Gleam raiding identity? Interesting!

RonGAR

Nice long chappie... thanks for that. -------- I see Trouble ahead with the fundamentalist. Looks like her Azzshi brother is going to have to flatten a continent or two. -------- Her human brother is back to being a douche. Trying to mask his 'inferiority complex' with an imagined up, 'abandonment issue'. Bro, its clear as day your biggest problem with Nestra, is that you feel she steals your shine. Cut the crap. Its not her fault that she stands out whether she is human on Gleam. Seems like you should be asking yourself, why don't you stand out, with all your accomplishments? Im with Nestra, im done hoping this guy will pull head from ass. ---------- Give Helena her flowers. She deserves them just as much. She put in work too! ----------- Nice to hear from Gorge, Mazingwe, and Valerian again. Shame Valerians family is treating him like the black sheep. He is coming up with some insightful things. And they should thank god its him and not someone else. He is a good dude. So these discoveries couldn't be in better hands. Hope he doesn't turn 'bitter'. That would suck. ----------- Hmmm I think Nestra's body should be able to absorb the B' class core and become a High C or Low B from the jump. Her body could handle it. Already has a strong foundation. ---------- Thanks for the chapter it was great.

Robert

I'm almost starting to wonder if Ulysses was the one that loved (or at least emotionally relied on) Nestra the most. And was seriously hurt when she left.

Jamarr

If Ragnarok believes Nestra is a transformation gleam, then why does Ragnarok think Nestra is going to Zurich for a core transplant?

AntiClimax she her

I like that Nestra considered the implications of getting a core in her mask. That last one, semi-acknowleging her feelings around her family, especially. And Ulysses is such a prick.

AntiClimax she her

Does he though? Have a point, that is.

Cormac

I still think the Daniels is a spy. The evangelical nonsense is just a front/cover.

Nc100

Tanks for the chapter

Dietz

Ew, political grossness. Bet that won't come back to haunt her /sarcasm

Dietz

Eh, he's got a point, though if he's still doing it once she catches up he'll deserve every smack she gives him.

Shimelton

If she had given the sample or ‘allowed herself to be forced’ would Sereth have plugged that leak? Permanently?

roflkong3

"We’re really, really hard to kill. You need to trust in us a little more, right?”

Kennyevilmonkey

Not gonna see me complaining about an early chapter. Thank Mec!

Simon Hoerder

Thanks for the chapter. So her lack of following international news is going to bite her in one way or another in Zurich. Is she going on her own or is at least one other Palladian coming with her? Last chapter I assumed Aunt Claire was coming with her but now she sounds more like a solo traveller. Well, solo plus incognito Sereth who doesn't give a damn about visa and stuff.

Jed Wolfgang

What a huge tease this chapter was!

Jackjargon

Ahhhhhhh i want it to be next week so badly!!! Nice familly bonding scar talk was hilarious. It's kind of funny to watch her and her brother fundamentally misunderstand each other becuse they are too similar and both assholes 🤣

Cormac

Early chapter why? Not that I am complaining. More Nestra is more good.

The Bandersnatch

And Daniels needs thrown out of a jet with no parachute. I knew he'd be a problem!

The Bandersnatch

Uuuuuuugh Ulysses makes the back of my hand itch so bad

WarStrider72

Early treat, or else the Bob chapter comes out on Saturday

Domifax

oh nice - did you change the schedule or is the early release just to treat us?

WarStrider72

Thanks for the chapter boss!

WarStrider72

Early release what?!!!

R.M.

Nice 😀
