I got a lot out of this interview but I question his claim that the only way out of this is to change the minds of the people doing it—he says this explicitly and refers to this historically as the only strategy that works. Is that true? I can see this being a PART of a strategy, but historically, appealing to the better instincts of the perpetrators seems like a losing game, since the ones doing evil things are often all too willing to double down rather than change their ways. Sure, as he says, I know plenty of people who have great politics but are shitty and mean on an interpersonal level and vice versa, but we’re talking about an exterminationist world view here—pretty hard to get past that.
