I've thought about the same thing, and PRESUMABLY: the traitor is from a nearby pocket of civilization that opposes, or sees this one, as a threat. My issue with games like this having a purported "difficulty" is: it's a bit TOO on the dice at the end of the day. Having so many instant-deaths off the bat hurt them more than anything else.

I think something this does very different is: there might not be a traitor. Exiling or killing the non-traitor is interesting, but it's downright tragic when there was no traitor to begin with.
