I saw an early cut of Dark City before it was released. Unfortunately I didn't really remember what the differences were between it and the theatrical cut by the time it came out on VHS, all I know was my impression that I enjoyed what I had seen the first time better. By the time I saw the extended cut there was even less recollection of what was different from the first cut, so in my memory the one time only mystery one was the best ;)

The theatrical cut of the movie is locked away on the DVD release. Every version since has been the director's cut, you basically don't have a choice I'm all for different cuts of movies, but this George-Lucas style making the original disappear stuff really annoys me For every extended/producer/director's cut that's essential and completely obliterates the theatrical version (Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven, Dark City, Lord of the Rings, Avatar) there are plenty of theatrical cuts that are almost ruined by changes. The Martian, Star Wars, maybe Terminator 2, Spider-Man 2.1, Deadpool 2 ... but as long as it's optional there's no problem (though the current trend of 4K releases only having a 4K transfer of one cut, but not another, is getting VERY annoying. The Town, Tropic Thunder, Army of Darkness, Doctor Sleep, X-Men Days of Future Past ... they all have this problem) Anyway, from what I recall, the alterations in The Warriors is they added comic book transitions and they are very noticeable

Yeah, I hadn’t considered comedies. Although most cases with comedy directors cuts, it may be the stuff too raunchy and or outrageous for a theatrical cut. I know she watched Highlander recently. And in that case I think the directors cut would be preferable for a first time viewing. The difference in the experience isn’t that significant between theatrical and directors cut there. But then you have films like JFK and Watchmen. I think the directors cut is absolutely the ones you must go with for those. Especially Watchmen. The differences and experience with the directors cut is significant. Those films have highly complex stories that are enhanced by and actually made more clear by the additional scenes included in the directors cuts. And as I stated in my first example, Blade Runner is a must for “The Final Cut” You could go your whole life without the theatrical cut of that and be fine. The directors “Final Cut” for that is a must!

I do question that though, especially with comedies. Often director's cut and extended edition get mixed together, and a lot of the time the extra stuff was on the cutting room floor for a reason, even if just for pacing.

I think in most cases, the directors cut is the preferred version. Say as with “Blade Runner” The Final Cut Except some specific cases say like Apocalypse Now. The theatrical cut is probably best for a first time viewing of that.

Oh, is everyone cool asking for the "Ultimate Director's Cut" of The Warriors, or hunt for the theatrical? I just did a quick Google and it looks like the director's cut is the one most available on streaming services. Obviously Angel should go with one she can find easily and wants, but if there's a choice we should probably let her know which is preferred.
