TOOM - Portrait Mode DOOM
🕑 Added 2021-07-13 15:11:40 +0000 UTCWell now, this doesn't happen every day! Most of the time when I make an off-hand comment in a video wishing that a ridiculous piece of software existed, well. That's that, it's nothing more than a silly wish for a ridiculous piece of software, haha.
Not today though. Because TOOM. IT EXISTS! Now you can play the entirety of Doom v1.9 vertically. On vintage hardware!
When I covered the Radius Pivot a few weeks back, I was showing how DOS games like Doom aren't designed to be used in portrait mode. Obviously, since it wouldn't really make that much sense. But then I went ahead and stated that it would be dumb/fun if something like Portrait Doom actually existed, and hey, it seemed possible if someone were to make a custom version. Dumb, but possible :P
WELP. You never know who's listening, and developer Matt Phillips took it upon himself to make that absurd notion a reality. And Tate mode Doom, or TOOM, is the result! And it even runs in DOS on original PC hardware, none of them newfangled source ports or modern doohickies required. So let's check it out on the Radius Pivot and the LGR Woodgrain PC!
I also took the opportunity to film this actually in portrait orientation, because why not. I'd considered making a special vertical edit of the original Pivot Oddware episode, but seeing as every shot was composed for 16:9 landscape? It would've been too much work for too little payoff if I used the same footage, so I would've had to re-record like 90% of the footage. So yeah, this time around for this simpler video it's all shot vertically. Looks great on a tablet or other rotating devices! Not so much on everything else, heh. Whatever, it was a fun change of pace and I hope you enjoy :)

IIRC Doom draws it's walls as vertical slivers line by line. Since the amount of vertical drawing has now increased it could cause a slowdown. Example on Fabien's page under walls: https://fabiensanglard.net/doomIphone/doomClassicRenderer.php Love the channel!

I wish it worked with that hardware! Unfortunately, the Pivot monitor seems to be really picky with vertical refresh rates and nothing I've sent to it through my superguns has worked thus far

I wonder how well this monitor would work with your Supergun. It might be a great solution for playing all kinds of games. No need to set heavy CRTs on their sides anymore. Just rotate the Pivot, and you're good to go.

This is so awesome that someone saw it and was inspired by it. This is why I watch, for these little obscure corners you go to that take us back to the old days where some of us used the tech, but completely forgot about it.

This *monitor* needs the card, not the game. Without it the vertical refresh doesn't sync correctly with DOS software due to the unusual refresh rates expected by the Pivot :)

Would Toom actually NEED to be used with the special graphics card? I thought this mod runs in a fixed orientation regardless.

Yeah I know a bunch of folks who use subs even when they can hear. It can help in all sorts of situations, and also just makes technical videos with lots of odd terminology come across more clearly. Glad they're appreciated!

Funnily enough, I actually recorded some 360Β° LGR videos a few years back! Never posted them because I thought it looked just awful and then I returned the camera, haha I'm sure the cameras have improved since but yeah. 360 looks cool outdoors, but the stitching and resolution is dreadful when recording old computers and games and stuff indoors.
