LGR - The MiSTer Multisystem

This one's about the MiSTer Multisystem hardware expansion kit for users of the MiSTer Project. And it's more than just a swanky 3D printed case! The core appeal of the Multisystem is a professionally-built PCB that adds a ton of functionality and quality of life improvements to the main MiSTer experience.
So now instead of purchasing a bunch of separate boards, adapters, and other add-ons for the DE10-Nano, all you need to add is a Multisystem board, power supply, and a MicroSD card. It's seriously enjoyable stuff and helps take the MiSTer to another level in terms of being a complete bundle. It feels like a more fully realized, console-like machine now, and somehow that makes it even more enjoyable to use! Plus it has all kinds of nifty upgrade options with a modular expansion slot and SNAC ports and things, so it should only get better from here.
And well, I guess it's onto some LGR Christmas games. One or two at least, we'll see. I've got a number of potential subjects lined up but haven't committed to any of them yet, heh. I hope y'all had a nice Thanksgiving, if you happened to celebrate it!

Ah, sorry, then i must have misunderstood you. I thought you just wanted composite output for using some old monitor.

I believe the only things I mentioned are dedicated composite and s-video ports, which SCART doesn't provide without additional adapters. My point was that I'd prefer having fewer adapters :)

Well, some of the video options that you want are on that sweet SCART connector. :)

Im so glad you covered the dos experience. It was the main thing I was interested in and you quickly and precisely explained how it performs. I will definitely wait for now until the accuracy improves. However I share the excitement over the project. Thanks again for making such unique videos yet with professional quality. You are on par with defunctland for making some of the most highly polished videos, especially on such niche interests!!

It's built as a convenient point of entry, so I'd say yes in that respect! Setting up and using the MiSTer itself may have a learning curve if you've never used anything similar though

First time I heard about a system like that, and I Have to admit, I think it is awesome. As a 3D-Printing enthusiast I think the printing-quality could be better - espacially the surfaces or the transition to side-walls.

The Cave is a labour of love. A combination of using unusual materials to keep costs down such as benches made from scaffolding, and staying within the budget of what Patron affords me each month through the very kind viewers. Have they gone up that much? Jeez, it was like $150 when I got mine. But yeah, you need a DE10-Nano to use this board. Chip shortages have been causing price bumps sadly.

Argh I'm having major 20/20 hindsight regrets on the DE-10 (amongst others) thanks to the chip shortage... No stock anywhere, at least at non-scalper prices. Mouser lead time estimate is nearly a year out on the DE-10. Face-palm-desk-etc. Anywho, the multisystem looks great!

So the DE10-Nano is ~ $200 and then you add on another $275 for the multi system? Did I get that right?

Great look into what the Multisystem offers - been on the fence as to whether I wanted to grab one and migrate my DE-10 over, but it's certainly a looker and way more convenient. Doubly so as my stack doesn't have an IO board at the moment.

The basic setup uses up to 10W depending on the USB connections. If you have an mt32pi, SSD etc then up to 20W. It's really not using much power.

I've been diving into MiSTer this year as well. This and MiSTerAddon's MiSTercade jamma board are high on my list to check out. I think MiSter and a WeeCee would be a killer retro gaming combo. Great review!

After watching the LinusTechTips coverage on this, I was hoping I'd see some from you as well. Out of curiosity, do you have a way of measuring how much power it takes to run? I'm wondering if I could rig up a portable version of this using a portable monitor and a USB battery bank. It is just using 5V for its power adapter, so I just might be able to make this work.

I have had a DE10-Nano in my Digikey cart for a while now, but have been concerned about how I would get the RAM board (forums? e-bay?) and which others I might need. Thanks for the video on this!

Fantastic review Clint. You really, really got the point of MiSTer and the point of MMS. I've had my alpha for a few months now and I really prefer it over the stack I've had for a couple of years. Your review really shows it for what it is.
