Just joined Patreon/Time Team this video alone listening to Helen share her knowledge of the Anglo Saxons was worth the annual fee!

Andre Paquette

I thought it was worth commenting that this video captures an Essence of Time Team and why it was so good (and is again!) This is a great conversation by two informed and interested people. It does not seem like it was filmed for TV (or youtube) and comes off completely genuine and natural. And because of that, the viewer is immersed in it and becomes part of the conversation. It makes me happy to be a Patron. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but common sense tells me that the jewellery-making industry was probably part of the culture of the Angles and/or Saxons long BEFORE they emigrated to Britain.

Graeme Boocock

This is a wonderfully informative conversation.

Marilyn Wright

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Helen and Tony, it was very thought provoking.

Marguerite Mikelyn Allred Crawford

Wonderful - a real pub conversation if I ever heard one. More to come, I hope.

Alice Hutchinson

Goldwork embroidery was one of Englands exports to Europe at around the time of the Sutton Hoo burial. Opus Anglicanum was considered the best embroidery available at the time. There are a few surviving pieces in the V&A and the Vatican museum. It doesn't survive readily in archaeology but would use thread wrapped in very fine gold or silver leaf couched into a backing cloth. There are records and church itineraries that list it. The surprise at the gold artifacts given the knowledge of contemporaneous finely worked gold and gems surprises me.

What s wonderful conversation

George McCluskey

Helen is truly wonderful. Intelligence, kindness, and erudition in equal measures.

Helena Frisk

This combination 😍

Cheryl Kurucz

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Rosemary Henderson

This was superb - most interesting. Helen - you can do the rowing! Get yourself a personal trainer and he/she will whip you into shape.

Derek Barham

Love listening to Tony and Helen

Mark Lund

Wonderful to see these too in enthusiastic conversation...again. Didnt the Egyptians plan and start their burial chambers, pyramids etc long, long before they died, (I thought), so could that not have been the case with A/S kings/chiefs also? Rather than waiting until the bucket was finally kicked?

Jacqueline

Erudite & masterful as ever Helen!

Sharyle Doherty

Fascinating

Doug Mackey

Superb.

James D Speckart

A great discussion--Tony and Helen mesh so well and always seem energized when they get to talking with each other. Thank you for setting this up Time Team!

Elaine P

At the risk of being repetitive, want more! Helen is such an eloquent speaker, I could listen to her for hours. This was a great discussion, setting the stage for what is coming next, whatever that may be. Thank you!

Anne Morris

What a superb interview!

Irene Daly

Sorry! In my excitement I keep pressing the ‘send’ key by mistake.

Barry Jones

What an amazing recording of Tony and Helen chatting in the pub. Helen really made me understand how she explained the idea of how the people of these times mannaged to produce such wonderful quality in the jewelry they consigned to the Sutton Hook dig this year.

Irene Daly

I cannot wait to see what the Sutton Hoo dig reveals and to reunite with some of my favourite Time Team gang- who am I kidding. With ALL of the Time Team gang.

Irene Daly

What a wonderful way to start my day. I want to be Helen for a day. I admire here depth of knowledge and her enthusiasm for our history and the legacy our ancestors have left us.

Andrew Lamb

Thank so much Helen and Tony for setting-up the scene fortis momentus dig at Sutton Hoo. As a Sutton Hoo NT volunteer I'm assured of a ring side seat during the coming month. So I look keenly forward to observing the developments as they happen.

Katty J

Great chat, really interesting. I feel that East Anglia was a place of many different settlers from all over Europe and further. The Snape Anglo-Saxon cemetery seems to suggest this in the burial finds there.

Patricia Amero

Wonderful! I'm looking forward to seeing the Q&As as well.

Patricia Amero

😍 This offers so much in passion and context. I realize Patreon offerings are a gift to us... and greatly appreciated, but I'd love for the world to see this as well. 🙏 Thank you Helen & Tony.

Jane McCormack

Fantastic talk! Great perspective from Helen on setting the historical stage on this newest dig at Sutton Hoo, as well as wonderful questions from Sir Tony.

Macswell

Always fascinating to hear Tony ask interesting questions, and listen to Helen expound on the subjects she has such passion for. Also, it was wonderful to hear her mention the work of the late Victor Ambrus. For me, his work was always wonderful to see, but it's interesting to hear how Helen felt that his work was also important because it forced them to ask questions, and find answers, and make decisions.

Julianne Ture

The Sutton Hoo project reached out to Time Team very soon after the 2021 reboot, so this has been in development for a while!

Kel Tyrrell

I really am enjoying Helen’s extensive detail n knowledge….and Tony is paring that info out particularly well!
