Lena had fallen into several new habits after her most recent fight with Kara – the first of which was her tendency to wake up in the morning and make her tea just the way Kara liked it, with two lumps of sugar and a heavy pour of milk. The second habit was to check Kara’s dating profile on the UpSwipez app a few times per day in between tweaking her algorithm, or waiting on Lex to call. “Come to lecture me again?” Lena asked in a low voice, softer and sweeter than intended as her eyes shined with hopefulness.
How could she begin to tell Kara that all she wanted was for her to acknowledge that there was chemistry between them, that their friendship had always felt like much more than that?
Lena would forgive if only Kara said the right things — if only the Super demonstrated that she knew the betrayal had cut so much deeper coming from her.
If Kara was capable of understanding why she still hurt from it, then Lena would be more than ready to overlook some of the lies.
She was on the verge of saying something about all of that when Kara turned, just enough so that Lena could see the long blonde hair around her very different face. Kara no longer had bangs, and she wasn’t wearing the bright, fire engine red lipstick that she seemed to favor lately.
“Kara?” Lena whispered doubtfully and took a step backwards into her apartment, pivoting to run just as Supergirl grabbed her arm.
This was unquestionably Kara, but not her Kara, and she screamed as the Super lifted her up with no effort at all to carry her into the living room.
“You’re not Supergirl.” Lena accused the imposter immediately when she deposited her on the white leather sofa. “Where is she, what have you done to her?” Lena demanded, her scowl a perfect mask that hid the fear that spread through her until it permeated the air, pungent and sharp.
The imposter sniffed the scent and tipped her head to the side with a slow smirk. She let her gaze trickle down Lena suggestively, and then she shrugged as though bored. “First of all, I am Supergirl,” She announced proudly, an arrogant slant to her lips as she stood in front of Lena. “You can think of me as the Kryptonian you deserve.”
Lena opened her mouth, then closed it again as she tried to unpack that statement.
Kara seemed undeterred as she carried on, her hand lifting to count off as she spoke, “Second, I’m not going to hurt you - well, not unless you ask nicely. I know how you like it rough.” The new Kara whispered, and Lena felt goosebumps rise along her pale skin as she swallowed thickly.
“Why are you here?” Lena asked, a tremor in her voice as she observed this Super.

“Guess she’s doing something better than flying over here.” The imposter announced with fake pity on her face. “While we wait, why don’t you sit down and tell me why the mere sight of me on the balcony before got you wet, when you supposedly hate me?”
Lena stood in silence, her tongue pressing against the backs of her teeth as she struggled to form a logical response to that. She narrowed her eyes at the offensive Super, but ultimately took a seat on the chair across from the sofa.
“I don’t hate Kara, I just hate that she doesn’t trust my intentions after I’ve proven my willingness to help in a crisis situation over and over again.” Lena couldn’t help but pout and glare at this strange Supergirl, noting all of the minor differences – the part in her hair, the gloss on her lips and the casual way she made herself at home.
“What’s it to you, anyway?” Lena snapped as she watched Kara stroll over to her bar, helping herself to a ripened plum and shining it on her suit before biting into it. “How did you get here? Are you part of Kara, a copy, or are you somehow from another universe?”
She could have accused her of being someone with ill intentions, except Lena smelled that this was Kara — the alpha’s scents were distinct and would be hard to match. Still, Lena didn’t totally rule it out, considering she had been deceived for years.
At the same time, Lena wanted this to be Kara. This conversation intrigued her, because her Kara would never speak to her so candidly about sexual attraction.

By the time Lena composed herself enough to refute that, Kara had wandered off to explore the rest of her penthouse.

In hindsight, it should have – especially because she was accustomed to constant disruptions in her personal life.
What she never could have anticipated, however, was Lena would call for help from her apartment at the same time that she was standing in the middle of the DEO.
Kara glanced at Lena and then down at her watch and wondered if it was broken.
Lena stood at the stairs in the central part of the building, wearing a tier-sleeved black dress with her hair down and wildly crimped like she didn’t care to brush it that day. She seemed even more pasty than usual, especially with her signature red lip as she sneered at Kara.
“Supergirl, I should have known you’d be the last to show up to my little party,” Lena called out, flicking her hungry eyes over Kara and letting them linger in the spots where Kara’s suit fit a bit more snugly.
Kara stood with her legs further apart almost on reflex, and only noticed after the fact that she had changed her posture when Alex sent a curious glance of warning her way.
At a long delay, Kara realized that Brainy and Sam of all people were standing off to the side with Lex and keeping his arms trapped behind his back.
Kara bristled as the threat registered and Lena smirked down at her imperiously. “I wouldn’t make any sudden moves if you want your friends to stay intact.” She whispered, looking very pleased with herself as she inclined her head towards Alex and the rest of the DEO agents, who were still standing in place.
“What did you do to them?” Kara asked, finally taking in the tight-lipped scowl on Alex’s face that she only ever wore when she was forced to keep her opinions to herself in Eliza’s house.
“I had your little imp keep them in line until you got here. We have unfinished business, you and I.” Lena supplied with a cold smile and flick of her wrist. “Did you honestly think you could escape that easy, Kara? You can’t just bounce around timelines without consequences.” Lena descended the steps with purpose and traced her fingertip over the crest on her suit with scorn. “Some hero you are, running from your problems.” She tsked quietly, her sharp eyes piercing through the alpha’s bravado.
“You were trying to kill me.” Kara stressed, her fingers curling into fists at the memory of the searing pain.
“And you refused to fight back,” Lena mused, her curious ethereal eyes dancing over Kara’s face as she breathed out, “why is that?”
Kara could feel Alex’s eyes burning into her with questions of her own, and the alpha clamped her mouth shut.
“I’ll find a way to loosen your tongue, one way or another.” Lena informed her with a coy glance, and then turned to nod at Brainy. He pulled a bottle from his pocket, and with a flash, Mxy was standing before him.
“Ah, Kara!” Mxy’s eyes lit up, and he moved as if to approach them both, with the same chaotic energy as always. “It seems I may have caused a slight mishap with—"
“Send everyone in the DEO to their happy place, and don’t say another word.” Lena cut in effectively, and Mxy rubbed his palms together, then snapped his fingers with an apologetic shrug.
“Bottle him,” Lena instructed, her eyes still fixed on the alpha, as if expecting her to make a move.
Kara wanted to, more than anything, but she couldn’t risk the lives of Alex and everyone else at the DEO. She slapped her watch as it flashed again and then felt her stomach sink. Oh Rao, Lena.
Brainy carried the bottle containing Mxy out of the room, while Sam marched Lex off to a cell.

“Now that I have your full attention, you’re going to give me all of the answers I want.” Lena murmured, a sultry sounding rasp to her voice as she tipped her chin up to look Kara straight in the eyes. “Starting with why you’ve never acted on your feelings for me in this timeline.”
“That’s why you’re here?” Kara blurted, her tone far less worried than it was before as she laughed awkwardly. “Wow, okay, first of all we’re best friends, and I — I mean it’s—it’s not like that. We aren’t — I’m not — why would you even ask that?” She finally managed to sputter once all of her swirling emotions finally settled on one: denial.
“Is that so?” Lena mocked, pulling a remote from her pocket to activate the screens in the DEO. “Then how do you explain this?”
