agreed, probably also why the front cover was broken off to begin with

I wonder if that's a replacement battery. It seems odd there would be a hand-written "+" sign on the board unless someone was replacing it, as it's clearly marked on the board (but possibly under where the battery should sit). I would clean off that gunk too before it eats away at anything.

That came apart pretty much exactly how I expected. I bet AT&T had a tool to release the clips to pop the faceplate off the cartridges.
