Almost there!

The most off-putting part was painting the rail ballast, but it wasn't that bad! I sprayed it with Deck Tan and gave the whole patch a generous black ink wash coupled with a few stains of enamel earth effects here and there. Then I just picked out some of the individual stones with different shades of grey and sand.
The small clutter was a bit tedious, especially the trash can. Here I started with a zinc-plated effect done with sponges, just like on that fuel drum I've put on that Valentine Mk IX, added some chips with a brush and finished with airbrushed rust tones and enamel pin washes. The cat was also painted with an airbrush and I only used a fine brush to pick out a bit of that fur texture. The rat and pigeons were too small for me to paint, and they've really put me out of my comfort zone! This is where I noticed my shortcomings because I can switch between stylistic and more realistic styles when it comes to vehicles and their weathering, but when painting figures or animals, I only know one style. But hey, that just comes with trying new things, right?

Love how you trimmed the veneer around the rail ends. I don't think I would have thought of that, let alone attempted it, and it makes a surprising difference. Oh, and good strategy to hide the animals' faces so you don't have to paint them 😁

Good question! But I'm a bit hesitant to add more. I don't want to overwhelm the rust effects underneath and also, when I looked up reference images for pigeon poop, it occurs in large quantities only in places where they spend a lot of time. Be it parks with trees, tall buildings or power lines. There's nothing of that sort near the train, so my guess is the amount of pollution wouldn't be that severe either. But that's just my interpretation!

Love it. My job involves paint inspection and corrosion control which means I see a lot of objects that require represervation. The look you achieve with the rust and paint remains is spot-on. Who knew plastic could corrode!!!!! 😆
