It always surprised me how red Lee County was, since it always felt pesudo-red to me. They have such a great system for waste disposal, but then you drive past the local Planned Parent Hood and there's always a group of people protesting it. The funniest thing to me was seeing Black Live Matter protest at FGCU. Seeing the tamest protest back in 2016 juxtaposition to the Black Dean trying to placate them in the most animated way possible was comedy gold.

Nah I moved to Gainesville like 15 years ago. I know Lehigh Acres has always been rough. As for their budget, I doubt it. It's a super deep red county (as you know). Long-standing ties with the Bush family and GOP leadership. The Bush's have vacation homes there. Tons of rich conservative retirees paying a fuck ton of property taxes, and they all support a militarized police force. It's easy for them to justify.

Point is things are beyond fucked, and Transport Canada willfully ignores the realities of life as a railroader. Never mind the fact that the divorce rate is among the highest in any industry, what about the fact that you spend 24-31 hours away from home every couple of days? I used to be able to make trips as often as I could handle (while getting the rest I needed between them) and earning all the miles I needed each month, and at the end of said month, I could have 10-12 straight days off. Not vacation, unpaid days, but I made the max amount of miles so I was free from getting called in. It was wonderful. Sure, you sacrificed at least a couple weeks each month to working your ass off, but you could go hunting, or camping, or spend time fixing up your house, or hobbies. Maybe make a quick trip. You were FREE. Now you will never get more than a few days off together without taking personal leave days or vacation. (I know that sounds entitled, but we fought for these in negotiations, and other workers should too. Laborers and unions need to stop rolling over and taking the corporate dick so readily)

Things have changed with Transport Canada mandating mandatory rest practises, but the reality is all they did was force workers onto 8 hours of rest after shifts away from home, and 10 at home. So I could work for (this happens rarely but is often enough it’s an issue) a 2-3 hour shift, and then be automatically forced onto 10 hours rest, because clearly I’m unrested. Previously you had the choice (and the RIGHT, this entire time!) to take up to 24 hours at your home location, and up to 8 at the away from home. All they did was take away control from you. And also, you won’t hear this elsewhere because why would the railways advertise it. Nowadays, they have you work to your away from home, hold you there for the maximum alloted time, order you to work home, but your train is 4-6 hours away. So you’re up for 4-6 hours, and chances are you were before you go called in the first place. Hope you’re able to handle a potentially 36,000 tonne behemoth of metal and product. There are checks and balances in place, but anyone that believes the companies won’t go after employees for calling in sick or unfit is fucking insane. They won’t go after you directly, they’ll just start targetted testing of said employee and actively pursue them.

I'm shocked we haven't had many of them. If you work for Canadian National, CN-and I am sure it is the same with the other rail companies- you could finish an 18 hour shift and get called in 4 hours later. Sometimes people don't even get all the way home after work before they are called in again. People in control of heavy equipment and dangerous goods need sleep, they need protected rest time. My family and friends have worked for this company. That is how I know. I know how they operate. Yes, they pay good, and that is how they trick you into putting your life and the lives of millions at risk. It is dangerous work made more dangerous by reckless industry practices.
