Yeah, I cut my teeth on D&D 3.5, and the changes to how spells work throw me still.

Never mind the level thing. Mage Armor in dnd lasts 8 hours flat. I'm more used to Pathfinder 1e where it is based on level.

This is why you cast mage armor first. Depending on your caster level, you cast it prior to entering a dungeon. Also invest in Dex as your secondary attribute.
