As it stands, if you have beaten the main story, the maze is not a challenge anymore. But as you grow, the maze grows with you. With higher maze power comes more exp for growth to follow. But also improved enemies and new encounters. Relics and potions also scale accordingly.

The latter. You can grind lower levels if you want to, but upgrading the maze is the natural progression.

Is upgrading the maze required to progress through the stories/growth levels, or is it to speed up the grind of exp/shards while giving the game a new kick?
