We used segments …. Don’t know if it was the actual dragon rules but we did …. D4 +segment for casters, d10+weapon speed, +1 per 5 feet move… yes we were all math geeks … think we modified with int/dex… count up

Check out the Spheres of Power/Might from Drop Dead Studios (3rd party book for Pathfinder). Been a really big inspiration for me. Basically the "classes" are more like bundles of feats that all share a theme or interact with that sphere's core ability, and dipping into multiple spheres simply means you won't get that far in any one of them. It won't evoke character the way a class does, but it definitely evokes cool actions while providing a lot more flexibility and customization.

I'm thinking rogue/artisian with a little space marine thrown in for when stuff goes sideways. :)

I get the design of classes in that it keeps things easier to structure but if D&D has taught us anything over the multitude of editions, players are always looking to push the bounds of what an archetype is. Fighter/Cleric/Thief/Magic-User wasn't enough. Players wanted to be a Ranger/Druid/Swashbuckler/Sorcerer. And that wasn't enough, they wanted to be a Warlord/Warden/Bard/Wizard. And that wasn't enough, they wanted tons of sub-classes. I like the idea of a game with no classes but I also understand that it is very hard for design. It would be interesting to see, if possible, a trimmed down "sub-class" structure kind of like the Midnight setting form Fantasy Flight Games. They had "Heroic Paths" that gave small boosts and abilities for every level. Nothing earth shattering or complicated but it allowed for distinguishing characteristics which were gained outside of the class structure.
