Darkest Dot

Single board computer, system on module.

Only read the coment about harper is soren now. You would have to change that fast over all chapters because a change like that disrupts the immersive of the story for the readers. Also i think you are the only one who has a problem with that name, that it sounds like the pirate guy. Not even if you build a family connection between them i would have suspected that. I only do now because you write about the name stuff.

Gah, I hate when I fatfinger a word just enough for spell check to miss it. Good catch.

Let's show them were a force to be *reckoned* with. Not reconned. Good chap

Sod's law says that Murphy was an optimst.

Also curious about those coming for Dalton- obviously didn't take my suggestion to ship out the body with his Engine deliveries. Didn't the 'cabal' send the pirate to attack him? It's been about that much time to transit the breadth of STO.

Silver Beard

Kane's on the cusp... which usually when everything goes sideways. Hope he's spent some time on the orbital defenses. Pretty sure he's going to need them while his 'fleet' is elsewhere.

Yeah that’s why I figured the guy was dead and our MC would have something new to build upon. Like the Blue Bell chips wouldn’t be top of the line right now but way better than what he can currently print out.

Gabriel Melnik

Chip making is an extremely cutthroat business, no individual inventor can tip the scales but large research labs with DEEP pockets. It's not like in a field like medicine where a guy in a personal laboratory can discover insulin and make millions out of the patent. Finding a chip brand that went under isn't evenhard today.

jon H

Oh I was thinking the Dead ship owner of the “blue bell” was the inventor since that’s how it came off in this chapter.

MrFixit

I think he might try and track down whoever was creating the blue bell electronics and offer them a home at Eden's End. Another inventor who wants to make things crushed by the corporations as an ally would fit right in.

jon H

Oh I find it exciting that he possibly found a way to make his own advanced computronics. He could call that division “Blue Bell” in honor of the creator.

Gabriel Melnik

You know that there is already lingo to call all in one computers? Integrated computers, or if you are doing it really dirty, a soldered PC. Granted, the low level architecture probably will be different, using a superconductor instead of the good old silicon wafer, but calling it Integrated Computing Unit, or ICU for short could be a better name than computronics in my opinion. Also that kind of integration isn't a innovation, but a massive fuck you to consumers, because if something breaks, you have to replace the whole piece. Think of it like a smartphone, you buy the device and it's a one piece stuff that the end user can't make changes to the hardware without specialized tools. If the stuff were cheap then just replacing it wouldn't hurt much, but here once it breaks you need to shell out a lot of monies. Also, another punch to the IT guy dick is that a truly all in one computer without modularization means that hard drives work only while the logic engine of the chips work, and if it mucks up, then you must fix it in order to get your data back. Also there wouldn't be switchabke backup drives. And sure, all of this can be swept away under the argument of "it's the future, that kind of failures is something only known in history books" and to that argument I evoke one of the basic laws that define all of existence, Murphy's law. Edit: Chip manufacturing is one of the most cutthroat industries out there, no market manipulation is needed for a industry giant to go bankrupt, look at Intel for example, those dudes had almost a monopoly on CPU's and now they are sinking
