this explains a lot but the more it went on the more messed up it became. the worst part is the way she got pregnant a second time through a word similar to grape but because Anshi did the initiating...I guess it stopped the emperor from attacking innocents after but still not good

This show handles these topics so maturely that I feel flashbanged by it all. Like, "Oh, okay so this is how we are doing this now" kind of shit. It is complex and real. It made sense why the previous Emperor became who he was but all I could think with him was how pathetic he was and only felt contempt. The writing is incredible.

The late Empress who did everything for the sake's of her child ultimately gave him a room so he could freely even if that unknowingly poisoned him. Like Maomao said, the irony is so real, as it reflects how fucked up the situation is. In her effort to protect her child, she became an extreme helicopter parent that scarred him, which lead to his disgusting pedophilia. Tragic. As they say, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. And they brought up the Jinshi thing being switched at birth again, which goes back to the whole Consort Ah-duo in season 1. I guess the Empress Dowager knew about that too but still cared for him tenderly regardless, in her own strict way.
