Both FMA anime do a good job of managing tone in my opinion. We get the humor and over-the-top actions from quirky characters, but then we also get the more serious stuff. This episode does a good job balancing the tone. I do wish that FMAB would slow down from time to time as it does seem to rush sometimes. But, I'm being picky there lol

This is not an spoiler but more of an interesting note: As it was shown on this episode Alchemist encode their notes so other alchemist or people would not be able to read or discover something the author doesn't want to be known. In the manga its stated that: - Marcoh encode his alchemical research as cooking recipes - Roy Mustang encodes it as a "dating journal" π of the multiple girls he dates, and he is seen as a womanizer because of this π - And Ed an Al encode their notes as a "travel journal" from all the places they have visited during their search to recover their bodies
