My opinion. DS9 should be watched as its not that bad and part of the cannon of Star Trek. Also, You like Colm Meaney and Keiko (Rosalind Chao) and Worf... and I hope you watch Voyager myself and Enterprise and Discovery and The Movies and Picard :D You have to watch Picard! The last 2 movies...eh but if you plan to watch Picard, You must watch them and also character developments would be missed if you didn't... :) Right? :D Carry on! ps, I just realized my profile pic is a mask, hahahaha

I do not understand how Sub Rosa gets a worse response than this episode. I would 100% watch Sub Rosa over this episode again. Both were goofy and dumb, but at least Sub Rosa is memorable and had some fun moments. Plus, has one of the best characters ever, Ned. This one is just boring and forgettable.

And there was that fake-future episode where Data was first officer under "Captain" Riker. He looked good in red.

The closest he came to being promoted was when the writers considered switching out Will Riker for Tom Riker. Will's exit would have left Data as first officer

I can understand why DS9 would be skipped. It's dark, loaded with war themes, and does not present the positive outlook on the future that TNG portrays. I personally still like it (not nearly as much as TNG but far more than it's 2 successor shows), but can see how others would not.

This is one of those episodes, where if they had more time to workshop it, flesh it out, make it a two-parter, and it would have been fantastic. But time being one of the few things you rarely have writing a series.

I've always felt that it was odd that they ran two Data-centric episodes back-to-back where something weird happens to him. It further fuels my speculation that about half the episodes for this final season had been in limbo for some time and they finally decided to use some of them up before the series wrapped. Last week I questioned why Data was never promoted and now I recall that he has been compromised on more than a few instances to the detriment of ship and crew. And it even happens in one of the TNG movies too! Seriously, they need to hardwire The Clapper to his power unit to shut him down in a jiffy when need be.

Hearing that Spiner had little prep time, it makes a lot of sense that maybe he leaned on using the weird voices as some shortcut to create unique characters out of them.

For me, this is a bad episode in the sense that it's below average for a TNG episode and I typically skip it on a rewatch. It's not bad in the way that something like Sub Rosa or Code of Honor are bad where I cringe the entire time it's on and I care barely stand to watch them.

I do wish they'd had more time with figuring out the mythology of the culture. It would have made it less of an easy fix. But there's only 45 minutes in an episode, and I don't think this story was good enough for a two-parter. 🎭

I think Blood Oath is a great episode of DS9. Since it marks the return of a few Klingons that hadn't been seen since TOS.

Strange that Data doesn’t understand what it means to sculpt an abstract concept when he seems to paint abstract things all the time and is well versed in a number of artistic schools.

I know this episode is too out there for some people to enjoy it but for me this is one of Trek's most creative ideas and I love it. Also while I would be over the moon for you guys to react to DS9 I don't want you guys to have to force yourself to react to something just to please us.

I really enjoy the idea of profoundly ancient interstellar civilizations. There are some good episodes that deal with them ("Masks", "The Chase", TOS's "Return to Tomorrow", much of DS9 with regards to the Bajoran, etc.), but I don't think Trek explored those ideas as much as they could have.

As for the deeper meaning of this episode, I believe this civilization suffered a terrible disaster, where their planet stopped spinning, and their sun never set again, causing their extinction. While the moon still circled the planet, it was no longer 'chasing the sun away', people died of thirst and those without shelter burned alive. The 'old man' personality probably lived on the unlit side, trying to stay warm in eternal darkness. The 'archive' is a lot like the probe that made Picard relive a full life in an earlier episode, but this time, the society was much more ritualistic/religious, and it contained the experience of thousands instead of just one. It also didn't affect the ship's crew, except for data, so it was meant to release its data into the first system it encountered that could interpret it, which in this case was the Enterprise and Data. It's basically a program that generates a temporary museum. Definitely worthy of study and preservation.

I do enjoy when Brent Spiner gets to play multiple characters, but here I just cannot get past all the silly voices. No matter how you explain it, I cringe through those scenes. Also seems weird that part of Troi's duties are teaching children and androids how to express themselves through art.

I confess I used to dislike this episode when I was younger, but it's grown on me over the years. There are a lot of episodes from season 7 that feel like "fever dream greatest hits" ("Sub Rosa," "Masks," "Eye of the Beholder," "Emergence," "Genesis," etc). I'm sure that, with the end in sight, the writers just went nuts with all kinds of wacky ideas. As such, Season 7 is actually one of my favorites - though I'm 100% sure I'm in the minority. There's just so much variety - even the weird episodes are great fun.
