Janus is great if they're all grouped up and far away. In this case, his entire party was attacked by many, many enemies. His toolkit isn't fantastic for dealing with threats that get right on top of him. It's not like he could detonate a mana pearl in his own face! I imagine he wouldn't be alive if he'd tried that. To address why he didn't simply stop the monsters from pouncing on him: he was knocked over by their initial burrowing into the cavern. They used the opportunity to jump right on top of him. There's also an element of panic there. Janus was able to rely on his allies to help him deal with the guardians in the previous chapter (like when Rowan helped fend off the guardian that attacked him earlier). In this case, he couldn't rely on anyone but himself as the others were preoccupied with their own battles. From a story telling point of view, I am trying to provide impetus to the character to improve himself in these close range encounters. I hope that clears up some stuff! Edit: I see somewhere that I made a mistake and your post revealed that. I need to edit one of the earlier paragraphs. "Janus hardly had time to explain himself as the ground shifted once more. He couldn’t even count the amount of [Heartstone Guardians] crawling out of the earth. The churning rocks under his feet interfered with his footing, and he fell to the ground. Moments later, he could feel one of the creatures swiping at him with its claws." Here is the edited paragraph describing the moment that Janus fell to the ground. Hopefully that makes everything flow better and makes more sense.

Thanks for the chapter! Fwiw, it was strange to me that he just let the same guardians dogpile him again after getting them off of him. Or that he just let them jump on him in the first place. Seemed surprisingly passive and out of character in what seemed an attempt to artificially drive the plot. Or maybe I'm wrong and it makes perfect sense, but it wasn't obvious to me from reading up to that point that it would go that way. Especially after he yoinked 7 of them with a single action, apparently clearing the entire field, briefly. Basically, it seemed he suddenly went from capable, kick-butt MC to apparently picking his nose mid-battle. Sitting there throwing up barriers does literally nothing other than briefly delay; he's never had a problem quickly and creatively destroying his opponents, but he just sits there and feeds mana to shields as basically a mana drain, followed by not leaving when he makes an opening. For that matter his entire combat effectiveness seems to have artificially gone way down ever since he joined his new team. (Hopefully this doesn't come off as harsh, it's not meant to be and I really enjoy and look forward to your story, just wanted you to be able to see what I see in the hope it's helpful, so please feel free to blow me off entirely if it's not!) Btw, I do like the idea of them coming and saving the team, it just didn't feel legit how they got to that point, and how little agency the MC suddenly had. i.e., the monsters didn't really seem to earn it.
