Thanks for this. Hope it's okay I say this first, but I pray your cat is well & is one of three I just learned about in your recent wonderful desk/musical instrument piece. I have signed copies of 2 NG novels that I busted my ass & bank account to get (travel expenses, time) and now I feel queasy when I see them next to signed copies of my beloved faves by John Scalzi, Margaret Atwood, Robin Hobb, Jim Butcher & Stephen Blackmoore. Anyway, you summarized this awful saga & his platitudes about life and writing perfectly. Although I'm sorry that it came from your own creative and psychological expense, thank you for helping me deal with my feelings of disgust & self-loathing (how was I so taken in by such facile charm?) I wrote out the last two paragraphs to post at my desk to read daily--they are beautiful, raw, and wise.

Mika

Patreon just deleted a whole angry and sad rant I spent 15 minutes composing, so I'm going to keep it short and just say thanks for this. I just found out about NG and it hurt because some of his works have meant a lot. This somehow helped with the sudden onset of hopelessness. Your lines about angels was very clever and very true!

Thank you for calling out the fuschia elephant in the room, and that women at the highest levels could be supporting more young women to save them some pain and fear. We rarely hear of a woman exploiting her fan base yet rich white old men are constantly held as the standard of excellence while these harms continue

Nicole J. LeBoeuf

Thank you. For all of this. Thank you.

Debra Doggett

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this! I spent so many years trying to stay awake long enough to at least write the one paragraph a day you should but as a widow with three kids still at home, trying to get back on my feet after having my home repossessed and losing almost everything who now worked at low-paying, lots of hours jobs so we could move out of my parents' shed and into a shitty trailer, I was just too tired for much. Time passes, and I did get some novels published many years later. Don't know if they qualify as "good" art or not, but they're mine.

Mary Alice Fraughton

Thank you. That means a lot.

Jessica Parsons

Oh, and in case I'm not clear, it's That Person who's delivering the pompous lectures, not our gracious host!

John F Newsom

Thank you for your clear headedness on this topic. I was a huge fan of Gaiman, even watched part of his master class on writing. I struggle with separating the artist from their character, like Orion Card, or Marian Bradley, or Scot Adams. Anyway. I appreciate the searing honesty of your rant. Plus it’s always great fun parsing your periods.

Justina Robson

I've read a lot about this situation but nobody has absolutely nailed it, and him, to the wall like you have here. What exception insight you have, and kindness, and a whole lot of other good things. Thank you.

Catherynne M. Valente

I just want to tell you how well written this comment is, and what a meteor of a paragraph your one about the snakes is. So incredibly well said.

Jessica Parsons

Ooof. Awful men are like a clowncar emptying out, but each new revelation comes with a pompous lecture on proper behavior.

Mary Alice Fraughton

I said this in the chat, but it’s like being lectured on the importance of cooking from scratch by someone who has never been too tired to microwave a hot dog - if you even had a hot dog, which you did not. Sure yes make good food. This is objectively good advice. But also sometimes: fuck it? Sometimes you make a ketchup sandwich with shitty white bread and it is objectively Not Good. The snakes have never eaten Neil’s legs. They’ve never even taken an exploratory nibble. This current mess is the closest the snakes have ever come to eating his legs, and what that actually means is that for a momentary blip in time he doesn’t get to sexually violate the snakes, because they’ve briefly stopped worshiping the ground he walks on. Which is not the same thing as no longer being able to walk. And while I don’t doubt Cat is right here, that he’ll eventually bounce back and produce something that rehabilitates him to the masses…I somehow doubt he’s doing that now. I would be very surprised if he is making any art at all at the moment, good or bad. Because, yeah, sometimes it’s just not feasible.

Karel P Kerezman

Yes. This. You understand. Thank you. (As a bonus, I had the side-order of "You're so smart and special you're going to do Great Things, so hurry up and git gud at everything because we have Expectations" because eeeuuuuugh.)

Lee Hulme

Cat THANK YOU! That "Good" prefix has always bugged the crap out of me too. If you *can* make art (not everyone can), make *any* art at all! Anything that helps you, heals you, lets you face the day and the avalanche of crap it's gonna bring. I have a sweater (from The Chimaera Project) that just says "Make Art About It", because that's all. I make stories and podcasts, and I hope they're good, but they're for me. And my biggest fan is my wife, and anyone else enjoying it is an awesome bonus. But it'll never put food on our table or in the animal's bowls. Which is good, kinda, because the second I earn a penny the government begins eyeing up our low income benefit and my disability benefits. I can't work on my art 75% of the time because I'm in too much pain, physically and mentally. When I do it's glorious but "oh you hurt? Just make good art of it!" is bullshit. And it's always guys like him, guys who have positioned themselves, using their privilege, as beacons of What To Do. But every time one of them falls to this truth, that for MANY of them, privilege = abuse of power, I can't help but wonder how many women they stopped from making their art. How many inner worlds could have been changed by the women they broke in their arrogant knowledge that they can do anything and get away with it, and if it comes out they just have to go quiet and come back later, maybe with a half-arsed apology, and slot right back in where they left off. Cat your angry essays unlock my own anger, which is good, it's easy to just sink into the mire and not do stuff. Anger lifts me out of it for a bit. Screw thay guy in particular, and screw every guy who uses their "wisdom" and following and image as a shield for abuse.

Catherynne M. Valente

He looms so large over the field that coming to terms with everything is going to take years, macro and micro.

Catherynne M. Valente

Like...if we could easily take that advice we'd probably have done it when parents, counselors, teachers, and literally everyone said it without getting paid to say it? And also a shit ton of people in this world cannot do what they do best, there isn't a minute between necessities for it, and sometimes what people do best is be terrible so...thanks?

Josh Neff

Cat, I needed this SO MUCH. Thank you. I'm so angry about this whole horrifying revelation and like you said, I'm seeing things in past writings in a new light.

Karel P Kerezman

And "also literally every high school guidance counselor" is where I started cussing at the memories of literally every high school guidance counselor I ever dealt with because THIS YES THIS FUCKING THIS. GAH. "Find what you do best!" Yeah what I "did best" back then was curl up into the fetal position, crying my eyes out, because life sucked. I'm sure that's a marketable skill, you useless parade of pithy-phrase-spouters. (Who were, of course, overworked and underpaid and ill-equipped, but STILL.) Ahem.

harmonybat

Thank you, Cat. I've been a Gaiman fan, and some of it is built into me - teenage me learned a lot from Death, and even after examination under blacklight and microscope, the things she taught me are still important and correct - so this has been rough (though far less so for me than for many of my friends). My heart breaks, as I know so many do.

Vladimir Barash

Yes, absolutely!

Amarytha

Thank you Cat, this is exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you for persevering and still sharing your insights with us today ❤️

Lynne Roberts

Thank you Cat for putting a finger on my unease and ambivalence about Gaiman’s work.

Jeremy Brett

That is sheer, passionate wisdom, Cat. And I personally would rather have a single word from you than entire volumes of Gaiman, before and now.
