Hey Nick, as an italian descendant, I have traveled far and wide in Italy. I can totally agree on the state of Rome, and if I can give you two words of advise : avoid Venice, it is far worse than Rome, on the other hand Florence is a wonderful city in which you are obliged to walk, as far as I remember, it's a very nice experience, plus you have trains that can get you to Verone.
