What caused the big issue was a content update that is automatically pushed. I think one of the points they announced is that they will stagger this type of updates in the future.

I'm no so sure about Crowdstrike being found totally guilty... I'm not part of cybersec so I don't know if Crowdstrike automatically pushes to your clients without your permission. If a client chose not to test and just deploy, some of the onus has to be on them.
