Sounds like you're having the same experience as most beginning teachers. One strategy I found to be helpful for engaging students is to use small group activities. I teach math. I'll talk about a topic for 10-20 minutes and then let them practice in small groups for a while. Once a critical mass of students understand the concept, I'll go on to the next topic. Students at that age like learning from each other. Often, a student will ask a peer a question they're afraid to as the teacher. Also, watching them interact helps you learn which ones are strong and which ones need extra help. As a side benefit, I just like listening to the stuff they gossip about.

Good point. We have a few clients using them. We use Only Office ourselves. Have not noticed the memory leak issue, though. But that does not mean it isn't happening. We had far too many compatibility issues with Libre Office as we have some document heavy clients that are on Microsoft Office.

Not open source, so maybe not :/ This is an area where I'd rather stick with FOSS software, as the issues I'm facing are pretty small. If it turns into a nightmare, though, I'm not adverse to using proprietary software (I already use Resolve for editing...)

Thanks for the kind words! I'll do my best, and it's interesting work, so I guess that as long as I'm motivated, there is no reason for them not to learn and pass their exams successfully!

Could SteamOS available for general PCs help? Those could be easier to sell in stores than a handheld, and a little cheaper than peers without the Windows license. IDK.

Teaching is tough to do well, but I think your thoughtful consideration of the challenges show that you've got this! I earned a job as an adjunct instructor of computer art and animation in the Amiga lab at Atlanta College of Art in the early '90's. Many students in my first two years of teaching had never used a computer and none knew how to touch type, but relying on a lot of Analogy and Metaphor brought learning success. In the end, teaching was the most intense, rewarding and memorable work of my long career. I'm sure you'll work through the technical challenges, just as I managed to overcome the technical limitations of the time and build a networked Amiga 3D animation lab with a custom programmed render queue.
