Patroncast S04E41 - New video format, & getting sort of engaged (in a weird French way)
🕑 Added 2024-10-14 09:21:48 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
In this episode, I ramble about:
03:09 The new style of video I've been reying out on the channel, why I moved to it, and what I have planned to make it better visually
18:36 Signing a PACS with my GF, which is a weird sort of French marriage, but not really a marriage
I hope you'll enjoy listening to this one, and that you'll have a great week!

Congratulations on your PACS! :)

I prefer the new style, but never had an issue either way. The video can be improved for sure. Congrats on the personal life as well. Love to see things like this!

Yeah, it currently looks pretty bad. The lighting isn’t good, but with the webcam, I can’t manage to get anything where I’m not overexposed, or grainy, and I need to raise my chair a bit (or, let’s be honest, just get an adequate office chair) to not be so low, with the mic right in my face). I hope the camlink can improve things a bit, and then I’ll see what I can do about the chair, Flexispot just reached out to offer an ergonomic chair that I could review or have as a sponsor, it might be the right time 😂

re: PACS - congrats! I can really relate to the bureaucracy of things. my partner and I registered in family court in my home country since we want to marry but definitely not right now, and now that we moved to a different country it seems it might be easier to fly to a third country and register as married there than translating all the court documents 😪 we talked it through a lot though and made it clear to each other that even if by law we're considered married, both of us are still going to propose and we'll have a nice ceremony with family and friends.

re: new setup, I think visually it's so and so, I liked the standing look but I also like having the warhammer stuff in the background. but I think just the improvement in b-roll alone is worth the change - it feels much more connected than it used to be (to be honest it was always kind of ridiculous to see you just moving your mouse around or selecting semi-random pieces of text just to fill time until you get to your next talking point), and the audio improvements are all the better. I do think you should probably arrange your mic so it doesn't cover half your face 😅 having it in-frame is fine, but it really shouldn't cover your face, or at least that cover should be kept to a minimum. looking forward to see how it looks with the proper camera!

Hey Nick, congrats on the PACs :) About your new video format I must say that I enjoy the better audio quality since I use headphones most of the time. Like you said, you just need to find a way to not hide yourself too much behind your mic, maybe there's a more discrete pop filter that could envelop your mic instead of hovering over it? Or maybe filming from the side at an angle could help?

Congratulations on the impending PACS! (: not sure what the best phrasing is :). We probably would have opted for that if there was such a thing in the US. We lived together for a long time before "tying the knot" with a smaller party, mainly about good food and music. Enjoy a good life together!

Oh yeah, I will absolutely keep the text in the news videos and other videos, I don’t plan on moving to just my head, that wouldn’t be very interesting 😅

Just my 2 cents, but my preference is that you continue to incorporate a lot of the scrolling text on screen. I think it validates your sources and is a nice break from the endless talking heads. Very helpful to be able to read along and help retain the information. In my view, it demonstrates a lot more attention to production value as well.

All the best in the new personal chapter!
