This is where you begin to understand Jesse, and even feel for him. Yes, he's a screw-up, and most of his situation is his own fault. But it's not that he didn't aspire to something better. And when his parents immediately assume that the joint they find is his, he doesn't fight them. It's not to cover for his little brother, but because, I think, he knows they would never believe him now. It's too late, they've given up on him. So he's given up, too.
