I also tend to read fights scenes a lot faster than other types. But I think it helps to make combat feel faster and keep up the tension. I think it definitely helps to have a protag as clever and observant as yours, since you can add in a lot of world building details or new ideas/strategies that he notices. And even if you don't add something new in every fight, you show his competence very well, which is always enjoyable.
