An expat (expatriate) is just someone who is living and working away from their home country. An immigrant is someone who is living and working away from their home country with the added specification that their goal is to nationalise and receive citizenship.

Hawaii is another place that would fit on that list of places. It's just not common knowledge outside of Hawaii.

Not for politics, just worthy historical context as I know Burnie finds things interesting: Worth noting that Palestine and Kurdistan aren't "breakaway regions" as far as Scotland and Catalon are considered. They are previous and existent nation states that were the victims of neat red lines drawn around natural resources by French and British colonial agreements (both of which were promised statehood). Kurdistan is essentially independent as it operates with an incredibly high level of autonomy within Iraq alongside its traditional ethnic lines, with parts of the constitution of Iraq which mandate a Kurd being in specific roles to avoid a complete breakdown of Iraq as a nation. It is the Syrian and Turkish sides that are vying for independence
