We just got our first real snow of the season on Monday, which is strange for my area in Canada because we usually have snow for Halloween. Regarding ice management, I wouldn’t say you’re doing anything wrong per se. Rock salt is generally harder to spread out evenly, especially if using a brand that has larger chunks or uneven chunk sizes in it. The uneven spread is where you get the divots in the ice. When I use rock salt I can go out 3 or 4 times when there’s a good build up of ice. Salt it, wait, scrape it, re-salt it, to try to get it all. Eventually you get there. Of course, preventing ice from forming by removing snow early and often will make the melting job easier. WisScout went into really good detail on other options available. Maybe something with more uniform chunk size and a dye would help you spread more evenly. I haven’t tried them. To be honest, our winter runs end of October to late April and by February, I’m so over it, I just throw the salt in the general area I want to walk and avoid walking where it didn’t land.

Great info! It’s also useful to consider what your spreading technique is. If you use a scoop and shake it out you don’t get as great coverage as using a hand or push thrower.

Oh my god. What you described with your daughter is EXACTLY what is happening with me and our 20 month old son. He's apparently great with everyone if I'm not around, but if I'm here he is a monster lol. It's so damn difficult. My sympathies to you Ashley.

Concerning ice melt. First off you have to understand what your actually trying to do . 1st melt the ice(changing the melting point) 2nd keep it from freezing again 3rd provide traction. Also keep in mind some mixes only work down to a certain temp. Your most basic is just plan old rock salt with no additives. This will melt the ice, provide some traction but not much more. This is probably what you guys are using. The drawbacks is that this works to about -6deg f and then for pets and plants this can be a little harsh due to the raising the ph. But this will likely be your cheapest. If I remember it's around 1/50 (1lb salt to 50lbs ice) Now after this there is a ton of additives or alternatives to rock salt. Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are probably the most popular. Personally I like a Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride mix with blue dye. Usually good down to -20deg f (Dye makes it much easier to see against snow and ice) For pets go with a magnesium chloride mix usually good down to -15deg f When using make sure you follow the spread ratio in the instructions and keep the spread even and reapply as needed ( could be a few times a day) I also supplement with sand as that adds grit for traction but too much sand can make ice harder to melt.
