Doric is hard to explain. Some people might only speak a word here or there and not even ken. While up here in the Shire and Highlands you get people who speak entire sentences in the Doric dialect of Scots. Some try to denigrate Scots as just a dialect of English ( they both divert from early middle English c.1300) Scots is distinct enough that English speakers wouldn't be able to understand a conversation. Its always fun getting people to try and read a Scots translation of Harry Potter and then say its English.
