Tim because it would be boring! Look in real life Kimmy would be a cheater, Josh would dump her. But due to the complex nature of Josh's previous traumas Josh isn't so much dumb as just not able to face reality. I like what someone said earlier that this is coming of age story focused on Kimmy. Josh and Devlin are mere pawns(maybe Devlin is more the size of a bishop) in Kimmy's tale.

At first I was annoyed by this. How f’ing dense is this guy? She tells him the truth and he thinks it’s made up and now she has to make up something milder for him to believe. On rereading, I realized this is a critical moment - Josh just accepted he wants the reality and not a fantasy. That’s the key to everything going her way. What humiliations now await our hero? The only way for her guilt to be absolved is to make Josh ask for it. Several times, just so we are clear. Oh, and while you’re down there, ask Devlin, too.
