The previous chapter ended with Katrina saying that she would open up to Alicia and share what happened when the Change hit. Rather than write an entire chapter that was just Katrina recounting what happened, I figured it would be significantly more readable if presented as something more akin to a flashback, which is why u structured it the way I did. In the next chapter, I'll have them both talking about the events of this chapter, with the understanding being that Katrina recounted the events of this chapter to Alicia.

Honestly, I had trouble reading through this one. Maybe it is because September has been hell for me and my emotions are everywhere.... but the pacing felt like it was fast/slow/fast/slow The other part is when you loom at the book as a whole this huge flashback chapter comes out of no where with no explanation as to why it is happening which makes it feel out of place, like maybe it should.of been a prologue

I studied music, primarily classical, for close to 15 years, across a variety of instruments. Classical guitar has always been a fascination of mine, despite never being very good at it, and I jumped at the chance to share that passion with my readers through this book. Admittedly, when I'm searching for music, I'm not digging through a catalog I already have, I'm mostly searching blind. I just really wanted a way to share the kind of music Katrina enjoys, and this felt like the perfect solution to also give more depth to her character. I struggled with depression for several years when I was younger. While my situation never grew quite as dire as Katrina's, it's certainly a mindset I'm familiar. I've since rebounded, and feel great, and I hope you feel the same. Additionally, this chapter won't have a song attached. I'm instead going to have a brief message about mental health, since the chapter is a pretty rough read.

While this doesn't affect the current chapter, I am planning to have Katrina and Alicia discuss this history in the next chapter. This will give a little more room for the story to breathe, and for Katrina to directly voice her own thoughts about what happened with the benefit of hindsight. The stranger knowing video game lingo is something I have a hard time being objective about. I stated that she appeared to be younger, so to me it made sense that she was a gamer. "The name's Name, Name Sera. Pleased to meet you." I can definitely take another pass at Sera's transformation. I do agree it feels a bit quick, but it's something I wanted to write and then sit on for a bit.

[. . . they almost never treated her like a person. To be fair, she wasn’t one. She was a monster, plain and simple.] What a toxic mindset to have. Whether it's fair for Katrina to refer to herself this way is an issue that I'll put aside for the moment. It must be so destructive to think of yourself this way. This, maybe more than anything, gave me insight into why Katrina thinks nobody would ever care for her on their own. Next topic: how do you find music to accompany these chapters, or how does Katrina find music to tell you to pair with each chapter? Were you interested in classical music before writing this series, or has writing this made you explore those areas of music? This next one is pretty serious, so please feel free to not respond to it, or to say it's personal and leave it at that. The scene where Katrina steps into sunlight the morning after the Change. It's so accurate that I hope it isn't written from your lived experience. Without getting too morbid, there was a moment in my life where I had thoughts that were too close to Katrina's going through my mind. It definitely hit me in a very specific place, and I'm sure it'll be very powerful for anyone who went through a similar experience. Thank you for writing something so real, and I'm so sorry for anything that happened to you to make the words so true.

I expected this one to be sad. I was unprepared for how sad it would be. Knowing where this series comes from and knowing how thorough you usually are with fleshing out your characters, it makes sense that Katrina's life is so full of guilt and misery. This may just be the optimist in me, but I'm still firmly pro-Katrina after this chapter. She has done horrible things. While I'm sure I'd say something different about a real-life person, Katrina is a character in a story. Something terrible happened to her (and to so many people in the world), and she did what she had to do in order to survive. It's very clear why she tells people not to trust her. She has done things that are morally reprehensible. But as a main character in a fiction story, I can forgive her enough to say that what she did was necessary. This chapter certainly makes me see her differently, but not irredeemable. What is irredeemable, though, is this mistake I found. [“Names Sera. How about you?”] Is "Names" her first name? Irredeemable. Also, this line strikes me as awkward: [. . . it has my name, information about me, it’s almost like looking at a video game status screen.] It feels a little weird to imply that this nameless character is familiar enough with video games to know about stat screens. That could just be a me problem. I imagine that most of your audience will have enough video game experience that the line won't be weird. I'm also a little disappointed with Sera's reaction to being turned into a Vampire. It makes sense that she'd be angry and lash out at Katrina, but it feels like there's nothing else besides the anger. It feels weird that living with Katrina for a month doesn't even give her pause from "turned into Vampire" to "GET THE FUCK OUT!!" That's all for my opening thoughts. I'll provide another comment with other things to discuss.
