Sturstryk

Hey, if it ever fits in one of your stories, feel free to use it.

Nyx Nyghtingale

Rivals with benefits is a sick name, I love it!

Sturstryk

Yes, "friendship." Though "if" Amara and Vee ever do hook up and are still prickly towards each other, I wonder what that sort of relationship would be called. "Hate"-fuck buddies? Rivals with benefits? A frenemy booty call?

Nyx Nyghtingale

Well for one thing, I'm certainly flattered you've given so much thought to the nuances in my characters! I'm not going to weigh in on how accurate your guesses are, we'll have to wait for future chapters on that, but nonetheless I'm excited to share more of their evolving friendship(?) with you!

Sturstryk

As much as I know a good portion of Amara being a jerk to Vee currently is a defensive mechanism (there's only so many times you're going to put a hand out to only have it snatched at), I can't help but feel that Amara's behavior is largely external as opposed to internal. In many ways, Amara is simply behaving in the way she thinks Vee wants/expects her to behave. She was told, to her face, that they can't be friends, and she's only received negativity from Vee since she found out she's a demon. Add in Tessa's totally 100% unbiased and objective view of the church and those that work within it, and it feels like Amara is more acting like how everyone thinks a demon should act towards an angel as opposed to Amara being her authentic self. Her jabs and snide remarks towards Vee almost feel performative, like they're coming from her thinking herself into being a jerk, especially when she's reacting to something that isn't a direct, intentional act of aggression from Vee (which has been pretty much all of book 3). It's when she isn't in her head that she starts acting as her authentic self: a kind and caring girl who goes out of her way to help others, sometimes without even realizing it. And, so far, I haven't seen her demonic nature really clash with that outside of truly stressful situations, such as life-or-death battles or draining would-be rapists dry as she hate-fucks them FOR JUSTICE (and for the huge amounts of demonic power and sadistic pleasure that she kinda got lost in ... but a form of justice could still be argued). I mean, her blooming into a completely unabashed and unashamed slut hasn't changed her kind demeanor, and if anything has only heightened her view of the importance of consent (largely because that's now an active concern of hers). So yeah ... I think Amara is largely being a jerk to Vee because that's what she's being told she should/has to be, not necessarily because she wants to be ... and I think it might actually be hurting her inside a bit, even if she doesn't consciously know it. Though, of course, this is just my personal read on the character.

Vee has always been a complicated character, and her scenes always get a healthy helping of extra care to make sure she feels consistent. I've been trying to plant seeds of her current dilemma ever since her first POV scene in Chapter 3, and it's been fascinating seeing the reception of her fraught journey. I always knew people would be more likely to side with Amara over Vee, but I've been doing my best to show that it's not a black and white issue. Book Three in particular has been really interesting because it's given me a chance to flip the script. In Book Two, people pointed out the irony that the angel was acting rude and dismissive, while the demon was acting with compassion and patience, but that's no longer the case. My hope is that, whenever these two finally have the conversation they should have had months ago, both girls will have legitimate issues, and the conversation will feel appropriately weighty. And obviously she's purely interested in large tails from a platonic, academic perspective. There's really no other options, right?

Sturstryk

Also, Vee 100% has an unrealized demon fetish. I mean, her noticing how large Amara's tail is? She DEFINITELY wants to know what that tail do.

Sturstryk

As much as a part of me doesn't want to feel this way, I do feel somewhat bad for Vee. She is literally having to deal with massive amounts of cognitive dissonance, with one side being the dogma and teachings of everything and everyone who has shaped her into the person she is prior to entering college, and the other being the morality created by the former being applied to what she's seeing with her own eyes. And that's a very hard thing to grapple with, especially when what she is -- a literal angel -- seems to give legitimacy and proof to everything her upbringing has taught her. For her, to question the church and it's teachings must be akin to questioning her own identity, her very perception of reality and truth ... and for her to actually be starting to do that is huge. So yeah, as much as I hate how she's treated Amara up to this point, I can't help but sympathize with the sort of internal struggle it must be for her to start to think that maybe, possibly she should believe the truth that's seemingly staring her right in the face instead of rationalizing it away in order to preserve her deeply-intrenched worldview that is intimately tied with her personal identity and perception of reality.

The important thing is that I get to showcase my ability to write bad flirting! I've been doing the opposite for far too long honestly

Ryan

And now the comment section can focus on what's really important. Making bad jokes about Tessa trying to seduce Nick.

AFanofRoses

I'm in full support of anything that makes proof-reading and edit-suggesting more streamlined!

Nyx Nyghtingale

You know, sometimes someone makes a suggestion that seems so obvious it makes me upset I didn't think of it sooner. Personally, I don't use Google Docs all that often (I write primarily in Notion), so that's probably how this idea escaped me for so long. I'll start this up with my next Rough Draft, great idea!

Ryan

Have you thought about making google docs or something, so people can directly point out any errors or questions they have? It seems a bit easier than typing up paragraphs

AFanofRoses

A few errors slipped through this time. [A skeletal tail protruded from the beast’s body, twitching and snaking along the floor the creature twitched its head towards the two girls.] I don't know what punctuation needs to go here, but the phrase "snaking along the floor the creature twitched its head" is asking politely for something. There's at least one time where "Purgatory" isn't capitalized, like in [Despite her multiple layers, the cold of purgatory was already . . . ]. It's capitalized in this same context, like in [. . . mostly resistant to the effects of Purgatory, she was easily able . . . ], so you may need to standardize on always-capitalized. [I know I don't normally give little peaks at the future, . . .] Little peaks are what Amara makes in a cold room. Little peeks are what naughty boys and girls give to Amara's little peaks. That's it for grammatical errors. Now it's time for the patented AFanofRoses takes things too seriously variety hour! [Where was her firepower? Vee knew she was more than capable of summoning hellfire and explosions . . .] I assumed Amara held back because her infernal magic distracted / discomforted Vee. The reason Amara gives is because she has a finite amount of energy, but I like to think it could be because of my reason as well. A double whammy of [. . . but Amara seemed determined to lash out at Vee every chance she got.] and [. . . *so why is she wasting fire just to make me comfortable? Ugh, she’s not making any sense!*] Is there a mirror in Vee's home in Purgatory? Because she may need to take a long look in one soon. [She was trying to be a bit more subtle this time, . . . ] Does Tessa know what "subtle" means? [*Shit, he’s getting comfy with me.*] Tessa: "Hey Nick, I enjoy butt stuff!" Nick: "Cool. Hey, do you like using magic?" Tessa: *He's getting WAAAAY too personal on me!* [The wards around her room were the strongest, which meant she had the warmest room all to herself.] I think Vee would be warmer if she and Amara shared a bed. Platonically, of course . . . [There was only one way to keep Amara fed, and it clearly wasn’t an option.] . . . or maybe not platonically?

AFanofRoses

I'm very excited to see the payoff from these early Purgatory chapters. I do very much enjoy seeing Vee and Amara jab at each other, and having Nick get some friend time with Tessa is great, but it feels like something special is just around the corner! To address your questions / concerns in the order you presented them: For this chapter, I see Amara as the new Amara we've gotten so far in this Book. New Amara, especially when we see her through Vee's eyes, feels like a VERY different person than the woman who freaked out over growing horns and a tail. Of course she has grown over the last thirty chapters (way to go!), but she's changed dramatically since the night of the ritual, and that change seems very deliberate on your part. It's nice to hear that the next chapter will have Amara and Vee talk out their feelings, but frankly I expected it at some point anyway. So much of their conflict stems from a lack of communication, and every indication is that you're too competent of a writer to make them never talk about it with each other. I had no problems with the fight scene! All of the action was easy to follow, but I am still curious what the monster is and how it ended up not only in Purgatory, but exactly where our two Purga-tastic ladies were. Hopefully we'll find out soon! Or maybe we won't, and that'll be okay too. My guess is that Tessa's scene kid energy infected Purgatory and manifested itself as the most metal creation possible. Tessa's circle magic did feel substantially different from Vee's circle magic. You do a good job keeping all of the kinds of magic in their own camps, so to speak. I'm also excited to see more of Nick and Tessa together! The combination of her perpetually-raunchy gremlin energy and his platonic-ideal-of-the-Normie personality seems like fertile ground for basically any kind of situation you could put them in, and I for one am all for it. P.S. I did see a few errors and I have a few more non-serious notes, but I need to run for now, so I'll get to them when I have the time. Probably later tonight.
