(You're fine! Mobile is weird.) Thanks for clarifying! I was just curious how much of the information was intentional vs. unintentional on my part. Amara's reasons for her behavior, for example, are multifaceted and it's nice to see that everyone has different opinions as to why she's acting the way she is. The nature of Vee's powers, on the other hand, is absolutely a new piece of information that I purposely withheld.

(I'm not used to commenting on mobile) Sorry for the late response, I've been doing a lot of traveling recently. I hadn't realized how much Vee and the audience doesn't know about her Angelic powers. Amara has a limited skillset, but as far as we know she can't lose her powers by misusing them. It was a revelation to me that Vee may or may not have a kind of guardian angel / judge watching her waiting to either take away her magic and/or outright kill her. I also never put the dots together (no matter how blatantly they were put together for me) that Amara was being mean to Vee because Amara wanted to become the thing Vee saw her as. I just thought Amara was done trying to be nice to Vee after being rejected so many times and after Amara let her demon side out on the night of the ritual.

Nyx Nyghtingale

Good catch! Definitely not a great place to have a typo XD

Jeff

Found a typo for you. “Every time I look at you, I’m reminded how easy it is for me hurt people.” Should be ‘for me TO hurt people.’

Nyx Nyghtingale

Out of curiosity, you say some points were raised that you hadn't considered before. Did you have any examples?

Nyx Nyghtingale

There's defintely a lot up in the air right now! I've got a lot of things I'm planning to explore the rest of the book, I'll certainly need the time

Jeff

It seems inevitable that Amara and Vee will end up having sex, if for no other reason than Vee would see it as a necessary way to support her friend if not an actual desire for intimacy, but that raises questions once it happens. Will the demon be able to draw power from the angel? So far Vee’s power has been pretty toxic to Amara. Would Vee’s Patron be able to see that she’s been “tainted” by a demon and would that cause larger consequences for her? And so on. Chloé is going to be hurt that everyone has been avoiding her, and if Tessa and Nick sit her down and explain the whole truth of where Amara and Vee went, she may be very very hurt that she was continually lied to.

AFanofRoses

Also, it's going to get hectic when Chloé finds out what's been happening to her friends over the last few months. I understand that they wanted to protect her from all of the supernatural phenomena, but she'll discover the truth eventually, and I predict that she'll rightfully feel some feelings about being the only one in the main friend group who was completely left in the dark.

I have yet to clarify what organization Vee is referring to when she mentions The Church. This is something that will come up later!

Sturstryk

Also, has it been specified which "church" Vee has been referring to? I assumed the Catholic Church, since they're kinda the go-to for this sort of thing in fiction, though I'm not sure if that's quite been confirmed.

Sturstryk

While it's very likely that the vast majority of demons aren't kind-hearted co-eds who just wanna live life, take their finals, and have lots of delicious, enthusiastically consenting sex, there's the fact that what the church has gotten wrong about Amara has been REALLY wrong. Like how succubi have to kill their prey and devour their victims' souls. I can't imagine Amara isn't the only succubus living off just sexual energy while keeping a fully sustainable and renewable food source, which allows for a low profile and much fewer murder / missing persons cases. I have a hard time believing that an organization as old, well-funded, and backed with supernaturally powerful patrons, would somehow be able to miss a tidbit like that, especially if a relative novice like Vee was able to just stumble upon one. Not necessarily impossible: ethical succubi might have an iron-clad "veil" that Amara just happened to fall through the cracks of. And it's possible that Amara is a completely unique anomaly and no other succubi are able to feed off of anything but souls, or otherwise have all chosen to feed on souls often enough that the church believes that that is their exclusive diet. But occam's razor suggests otherwise.

First things first. This may be my favorite chapter of yours yet. It may be extreme to say that my kink is when characters dish out some angry, cathartic, well-deserved truth, but I will stand by that. I have a favorite type of character interaction, and I don't care who knows it. This kind of raw, messy, complicated, emotional, very real exchange is, to me, a payoff every bit as rewarding as a fight with the bad guys. Next, both of the big conversations between Vee and Amara felt great! Every bullet point you listed was given weight and focused on. Some points I already mostly pieced together before this Chapter, some points I thought I knew but it turned out that I misread the situation, and some points I hadn't even thought about before. In every case, I followed what they said and it all felt right to me. Everything in those conversations felt like it belonged, and every part flowed smoothly from one topic to the next (to me, at least). Those conversations are a huge part of this Chapter, and I think you absolutely crushed it! You also deserve praise for your portrayal of Chloé. It's awesome to see a trans character written like Chloé is! Nothing feels either glossed over or fixated upon (assuming that an in-depth masturbation session is par for the course with this series). She's just a person, and I can feel the same sorts of real-world energies in her that I feel in all of your characters. You've mentioned here that you're trans yourself, and I hope you continue normalising marginalized communities through your work!

I think one question that hasn't been answered is if the Church is, in fact, misinformed. As it stands in the series right now, the audience (we) don't know how much of an anomaly it is that Amara is still a fundamentally good person and also a demon. It's possible that what's happening to her has never happened before. In my opinion, one of the more compelling aspects of Amara's and Vee's conflict is the fact that Vee had legitimately good reason to distrust a demon.

Sturstryk

Oh, I had no illusions that this would be Amara and Vee's last heart-to-heart and that it had somehiw fixed everything: you're a much better writer than that. And yeah, if Vee does finally accept that the church lied -- or at least was grossly misinformed -- about demons then it'll probably lead to her questioning a LOT more things the church told her that she, up to this point, just accepted and took for granted. I just assumed that Vee would probably try to postpone the existential crisis-inducing questions until they aren't in the planar realm that inspired Steven King's _The Langoliers_.

Nyx Nyghtingale

I briefly mentioned this in another comment, but I believe I forgot to clarify that this conversation is only the beginning. There's going to be several chapters of Amara and Vee slowly talking more and more, sharing their thoughts and fears. Right now, we ended up spending more time with Amara talking about her transformation, since that was pretty much where everything started. We are absolutely going to be learning more about Vee as well, but she just needs a bit of time to process everything.

Nyx Nyghtingale

Unfortunately for our little group, Tessa is the one interacting the most with Chloé, and she doesn't have a great track record when it comes to believably lying! I'll admit, I didn't even once think about the possible confusion of Chloé using that particular sex toy. I'm also glad the conversation felt believable, but one thing I might not have clarified is that this isn't the end. Amara and Vee are going to continue sharing information in upcoming chapters. And good idea about the food! I didn't event think about that!

Ryan

Honestly, the fact that she needs a powerful magical artifact to actually use most of her magic.....isn't really a good sign for her being a proper angel.

Sturstryk

I also love how, for Vee, a friendly relationship with a demon isn't not just a matter of cognitive dissonance on a world-view, entire perception of reality scale, but also a fear that it could be a literal existential threat. It also really makes me wonder about what Vee actually is. Is she actually a full-fledged angel, or just a human with an affinity for divine energies whom the church claims is an angel? Was Vee born from human parents or was materialized/incarnate into her current form? Does Vee have any evidence that she's an actual, literal angel aside from what the church and, presumably, her angelic patron has told her? There are a lot of questions surrounding Vee's origin and being, many of which I'm dead positive she does NOT want to entertain at the moment but are probably prima material for future books.

Sturstryk

I think the conversation welt really well. It very much felt like the aggressive parts were fueled by frustration and confusion rather than hatred, and letting these two finally get to explain themselves to each other felt incredibly cathartic, especially the revelatory parts for each of them when something finally clicked that they hadn't even considered before about each other. As for the flow of the conversation, I think it felt quite natural. Amara going into everything from the start of her "demon puberty" felt less like her purely giving context (though that did still feel part of it) and more like her finding a sliver of a hope of Vee maybe being her best friend again, since she actually asked sonething about her with genuine interest, and dumping everything she's wanted to say and tell her bestie since all of this started. Which, I think, works even better, because Amara IS desperate to have her best friend back, or at least for her former best friend to at least know what she's going through. But yeah, absolutely LOVED this chapter and am incredibly excited to see where the story goes.

Ryan

I'll be honest, I saw "magic wand" and immediately assumed Chloe was a magic girl. Oops! And another oops! on behalf of miscommunication yet again, this time isolating Chloe entirely too much. Good luck Chloe, hope it works out soon :c And I think the conversation works! There's a few bits I wish they would touch on (like Amara accidentally framing Vee for assault). But I'm not sure if there's a good place for that without interrupting the flow. Finally, maybe they should take some food into the bedroom too?
