I agree with Katlek, it does feel more impactful to have the "never saw him again" corresponding with the "leaving him behind"

I've definitely got some edits I want to make before it goes to inks, so I'll consider this when it comes to that step and see how it feels. Thanks!

Yeah, I see how that can make the panels look a little crowded. I'd give it a pass just this once, since such situation occurs only on this page, and that line with the mood of the second panel really fit together. :)

I could, yes! I had considered it, but something about it makes me think it would make the panels a bit too "one text box per panel". What do you think?

Wouldn't the "I never saw them again" have a stronger impact if it was separated onto the second panel? Just a thought, hope you don't mind such opinions.
