The “Basic” skill category has nothing to do with how useful a skill is but is rather based on the Skills which an infant is most likely going to accumulate.

If [Sleeping] is not considered a basic skill - they are idiots. A good sleep keeps you healthy, free of disease, improves learning and retention, increases your lifespan, keeps bones, muscles, tendons and teeth in top shape and a dozen other advantages. Sleep will likely magnifiy skill acquisition and advancement.

Daedalus

Well, there's multiple possible reasons there might be a skill confirmation window, and most don't involve messing yourself up in the future. It might just require feedback/consent before making any sort of change There might be some skill cap, but skills past the cap replace previous skills There's a limit to how many skills you can have Also, one might make the case that skills like Breathing and Sleeping might be the *most* helpful skills, as you're constantly using them.

edwin is an idiot. seeing that the system allows him to decline skills automatically tells him he should take something helpful and not *breathing* or *sleeping*.

Thanks for the chapter

Paths try to target a skill that’s related to their premise (the Way of the Empty Hand Path, for example, would pretty much always target Unarmed Combat if possible), but they only look at Skills that have been affected by the fewest Paths. Say Edwin completes another Alchemy-related Path. While it might normally want to target Alchemy, expanding or focusing its effect in some way, unless all his other skills have evolved/upgraded at least once, it simply doesn’t “see” Alchemy as an option

Daedalus

It's about skill evolutions/upgrades. Both the dwarves and the empire place a high priority on them because they let you gain new capabilities (rather than just improving prior ones), and Paths always skills to evolve/upgrade that have been evolved/upgraded the fewest number of times. Essentially, by taking Sleeping, that's one more Path Edwin needs to complete before something like Alchemy or Bomb Throwing could evolve/upgrade again.

So...have I missed something? Everyone keeps talking about builds and how you can ruin them, but I don't remember there ever being an example of a limit on the number of skills a person could have. For instance with her reaction to learning about his sleeping skill, ( Her statement being "you wasted them on things like sleeping?" specifically.) But I don't see how his possessing this skill actively hurts his build in anyway? IT's nature acts as a passive that makes it easier for him to fall asleep, he trains it naturally when lays down at night so no time is wasted on it that could be put to other places and again it's not like there's actually a limit to how many skills one can possess so I really don't understand this mindset. Also, sleeping should be one of the Basic Six (Seven when it's included.) Because everyone had to learn how to sleep when they didn't want to to some degree or another, just like with language, eating, walking and so on.

Daedalus

When was the last time you saw a toddler *want* to take a nap, though?

Nim

I'm surprised Sleeping isn't in the basic 6. Babies do a lot of it!
