Temple (REND)

A. - You're right that psychopaths are mostly in villain roles. People do want heroes as a general rule, so for popularity and wide reach, media has to go for heroic MC. - That's an interesting point about female audience wanting to make the psychopath more human. There's a large genre in romance of female MCs wanting "to fix him." - I've read some psychopath MC books (not web novels) and I noticed they write in third-person POV. I don't think I've encountered one written in first person. That's a reason why I wrote Erind in first person. You're right that it'll make the reader uncomfortable, but I have a suspicion it is possible to make work. Somehow, it's going well, so far with REND. This also explains the negative reactions when REND was just starting out and readers still haven't "adjusted" to Erind. B. - That's true. If a psychopath is a villain, then there's really no point learning more about their lives, like Erind hates waiting in line for the cashier, same as normal people. And people have to be scared of the villain, so yes, you're right that they are exaggerated to be seen as scary. - Yep, Erind has psychopathic traits. But she is her own person. That's the same issue as other characters being stereotypes, like the funny guy, the jock, the tough guy, the damsel in distress, etc. If I just focused on making a psychopath character, then better if I just made a villain. But rather, she's Erind, who happens to have psychopathic traits. I'm really planning to cut down on the fights. The frequent and long fights are a symptom of my being a pantser and being heavily influenced by fantasy quests stories. That's why it feels like dungeon clearing at times, which shouldn't be the strong suit of REND. Yeah, the target audience is really the problem. The genre too actually, because people browse and choose what to read by genre. Anyway, we'll see how this is going. I feel like female readers might give REND a try if there are less fights and focused more on Erind being Erind. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you for your reply! A few comments of my own: -Depictions of psychopaths in media/one-note I think depictions of psychopaths devolves into a 1-dimensional character because A. They are always assigned into specific “roles”, usually villains or anti-heroes. I have noticed for male-audience stories, the psychopaths tend to be villains and for the female-audience, the love interest (taming the psychopath, making them more human). Psychopaths being the MC is in the minority. Psychopaths not being the MC is understandable as their actions either make it difficult for us readers to relate or make us uncomfortable, as it deviates from our morals. By having us view these characters through the lenses of the MC, a “barrier” is there to help us detach ourselves. Afterall, directly knowing a character (first-person POV) is different from indirectly knowing a character (third-person POV). To illustrate this point, morality-wise, it is easier for humans to kill someone indirectly than directly (not sure if this paragraph makes any sense). B. Because of the “roles” they are assigned, traits of these characters are exaggerated to highlight their presence. Sometimes contradicts the characteristics of psychopaths. Your thoughts? -Well-rounded Psychopath I think it is a difficult task, but I feel you have done really well in that regard. In fact, I don't think labeling Erind as a “psychopath” does her justice. Aspects of psychopathy certainly explains her actions, but it doesn't/shouldn't define her. She is “her kind” and I feel that is what makes her feel alive and multidimensional. There isn't a “role” that is shoved down our throats! -Genre/Targeted audience The reason why I brought this topic was to suggest cutting down the fights if you are gearing towards an older audience, but it seems you already had that in mind. I also feel your targeted audience would be the biggest problem. If you are writing as a hobby, i dont think that matters much. However, since you're planning on turning pro, you probably won't have that luxury. But I am ignorant in this regard so who am I to say, haha! I didn't know you were also targeting the female-audience as well. Interesting!

Thank you for taking time to write a comment, and also happy I'm that you're enjoying REND! - I was going against genre expectations then, so I can't really blame those earlier readers. They see that kind of depiction all the time, and so they expect it to be true. And yes, many are young readers. - I wanted Erind to be a well-rounded psychopath (what a weird statement). There are good depictions of psychopaths in media, but I still feel like they're shown as one-note. Like, they just have one train of thought and don't act like normal people with psychopathic traits. I suppose what I'm going for is a somehow sympathetic psychopath character, if that's possible. - Readers do seem to like these Retrospectives, and I also get to clear my thoughts. I really want readers to connect to Erind, because by doing so, Erind is given life. If readers will self-insert, then they are "replacing" the main character. - That's actually one of the problems--the target audience. Also, the genre. I don't know the main genre of REND, which might be a problem marketing-wise. This might be considered "New Adult" fiction, because this is certainly not Young Adult. Most likely seinen. Yeah, I think better aim higher age because younger readers might not appreciate Erind that much. In the rewrite, I do plan to cut down on fights (because they are really long) and add more plot and conflict moments, so probably above YA or shounen if in Japanese terms. Also shounen is aimed at male. Erind probably has a big chance casting a wider net for female readers. I definitely enjoy writing REND!

Hello! First time commenting and I would like to thank you for continuing writing Rend. It has been an enjoyable journey. What got me interested in this story was the depiction of “psychopaths”. As you have mentioned in your earlier notes, a lot of what popular media labels “psychopaths” or ASPD is incorrect. Their unique construction of the brain really differentiates them from others, whether it be response to stimulus (e.g. fear), emotional control, tendencies, etc. Unfortunately, I believe these elements, which are hard to relate with, confused a lot of your earlier young readers and lead to negative feedbacks. However, there are also other traits in psychopaths that everyone can relate to and I believe you have done so successfully with Erind. I think Erind as a character is fleshed out nicely as her monologues and thought processes are rational/pragmatic and her impulsive actions are well in the constraints of her rules/anti-social tendencies. The most intriguing aspect of her is that she is well aware of her social standing and that is her greatest weapon. Anti-social but there is a task that requires social communication? Great, lets manipulate your blond bombshell of a friend and have her complete it. Don’t have the body seduce someone? Use your petite body and fake persona to tickle the protective nature of others. Her wide range of “social masks” that she wears and uses to its fullest potential to get what she wants is fun to read and relatable. I especially enjoy the dynamic between her and Deen as Erind is in full control on when she allows Deen to take the lead or not. Along with Erind, you yourself also make this story interesting albeit in a different way. Your commentary at the end of each volume also adds a different flavor to the story as it gives insight to the mind inside the mind of Erind. Coupled with this background information, I strongly believe you have done well with having the readers connect rather than self-insert into the character. Regarding turning this into a book, definitely! REND most definitely deserves a larger audience. Out of curiosity, what is your targeted audience? From my POV, in manga terms, it is hard to tell if you're aiming for the shounen (younger) or seinen (older) audience as the theme of psychopathy, if fully explored, should be for seinen but a lot of the components of this story seems to be for shounen. Hope you continue enjoying writing REND!
