🕑 Added 2025-08-26 14:14:56 +0000 UTCHello again, Dungeoneers! What could have been an easily skippable remaster has turned into this whole video due to the interesting expansions, continued jokes at Hexen's expense, and just having fun with everything, you know?
Heretic and Hexen: Beyond Heretic. A whole package, a fresh coat of paint and in many cases a complete texture overhaul in the Heretic levels. Nightdive continues to put the most effort into these things for better or worse.
Knowing Hexen was going to be discussed again, I spent a few hours learning how sprite sheets work in the Unreal Engine. The ettin, who has lived in the set since appearing in the original Hexen video, started as something crudely tossed in with Premiere and then became this:
Poor guy. He's a video stretched over a plane. Black background. Looks awful but it was so far away (and obscured by a purple force field) that it was hard to notice.
Now he's back! His color looks much better, his frames aren't interpolated with weird artifacts, and as you can see in the video, he's animated and moves properly! Not even a hint of texture filtering!
He still flat though.

Also just wanted to let you know, on the recent Borderlands 4 roadmap video from PAX West, there's a clip of Randy saying "I'll do my best to shut the hell up" at 2:45 followed by "I got a big fricken mouth" and I feel like these would be great for future videos should you need fodder for bits. Hahah, I tried to argue exactly what you did about the changes to Heretic on the Doomworld forums, shortly after the remaster came out. The community sure didn't like that -- I basically became the titular heretic myself for a few days after that. So seeing you raise the same points makes me very happy indeed :)

It had been a good probably...25 years and change, at least, since I last played Heretic on ye olde shareware, back in the columbine scare days, and not a terrible lot, but even so, and playing on a completely different input style, something felt different with the crossbow when I got it. Granted, I've acclimated and come to like it, but I'm still fascinated I could tell after so long.

Matt Tropiano (who authored most of Vestiges of Grandeur maps) seems to be active member of Doom/Hexen community and previously made (in 2010) Hexen hub Scourge of Viscerus (also quite good hub though not on same level as Grandeur). It suffers from Hexen shortage of enemy variety yet - as I recall - was slightly lighter on puzzles than Hexen. I hope this release also means that Hexen 2 expansion pack (or rather hub) and Heretic 2 may receive the same treatment in future.

I adore the Cleric's new shield parry. Introducing Dark Souls style combat to a mid-ninties shooter where the ai is as predictable as a ticking clock; That was either bush league level fumble, or a masterstroke of genius. I can't tell which? Either way can tear through crowds of enemies with my mace alone on the hardest difficulty!

Paper2D! Process is relatively simple, actually, as long as I line the sprites up properly to a grid.

Love the behind the scenes! May I ask if you used PaperZD or stock Paper2D for the spritesheets? I'm actually making a 2d beat'em'up in Unreal Engine 5.3.2 so I have a pretty good understanding on how to handle them. Anything you need about UE5 lemme know!

Awesome timing! Been interested in your review of this. Never played either game before but seen your reviews. The insanity of Hexen's level design has always put me off Hexen and intrigued to see if this remaster does anything to soften that. Thanks for the upload Civvie.
