Just catching up on the Patreon as a new Checkmate, and I found this movie interesting and oddly nostalgic as an example of post-Tarantino style movies. I thought a lot of the direction, visuals, and performances (particularly Cann, Lewis, Diggs, and Del Toro) worked pretty well, while a lot of the characterization and dialogue, especially in the first hour, were bad to awful, even for the time. Definitely a stark contrast to his later films! Great time capsule ep!

I do love how the ABC show "Big Sky" was promoted as a Ryan Philippe comeback tv series and John Caroll Lynch takes out a gun at the end of the pilot And kills him. He's in a few flashbacks after that but it mostly becomes about his character's wife and mistress solving crimes together.

This was the most *insert_me_listening_to_my_podcast_meme* episode I have ever listened to, and I love it. I for one am absolutely in the camp (obviously very late, which feels almost more apropos, in terms of looking back at one of the peaks of pandemic exhaustion, now armed with more hindsight) of enjoying just hearing Griffin and David talk. Not for the acuteness of their political commentary or for being particularly illuminating, but for being vulnerable and for being honest and for hanging out in order to hang out bc honestly - the fact that they've kept this up throughout 2020 when I can barely get my friends to Zoom with me every 6 weeks is absolutely a superlative feat. One I am happy to pay a coffee's worth for every month. Love these guys, and am both happy and proud to be Blankie.

This episode was fantastic. I enjoyed and appreciate Griffin and David’s candour in this and all episodes. Blank Check is so consistently great, witch is one of very few things I can count on theses days. I love that they so openly addressed how even the things that often make you feel most alive (movies, or whatever it may be) can some times feel empty and meaningless. This is something I struggle with at the best of times, so it is so nice how the two friends expressed those feelings with there signature sincerity, humour and insight. Thanks to the whole BC team.

I personally liked the candor and pandemia of this ep. Just drop that shit and let it it splatter out in any direction, that's why I come to BC:SF. Also if Griffin or anyone else needs a 20-100 hour experience that's warm and not totally uncinematic, Stardew Valley got me through a previous difficult time before the current, admittedly more difficult time. It's the only thing I thought of in terms of a Eurovision-level heartwarmth/satisfaction that's also a multi-hour timesink.

Loved the ep. They talked about the movie exactly as much and in the way it deserved. Appreciate them sharing how they're doing at a time like this, it's a very isolating moment and it's affecting all of us differently, it's nice to hear them talk it through.

Don’t think it is an unengaging movie though, mate. It’s a massively flawed, bizarre curio from from someone who found himself in movie jails then got himself the blankest off blank checks. Griffin clearly couldn’t be bothered - he watched it the night before, hated it, then recounted the Wikipedia page until he could talk about other things. And I find it faintly ironic that they’re bemoaning the massive misogyny of the piece (which is an interesting discussion to have) and... literally don’t even mention the female lead. And how is Ben not involved in the scumbum movie of all scumbum movies. This was a tough hang precisely BECAUSE it’s on the Patreon, we pay for this. It would have been nice to hear David and Griffin get tucked onto something a bit dodgy, kinda gross, and super divisive after the last two miniseries on two of the blandest filmmakers of all time.

Kinda baffled by all this "engage with this unengaging movie" talk in the comments. Found it pretty endearing that Griffin and David were willing to let their guards down a bit more about their mental states given the chaos of the modern world, especially when Griffin has clearly been trying cope through distracting entertainments like The George Lucas Talk Show and both BC feeds. If this was a main feed episode, I'd probably be a bit more bummed out. But given the commentaries and bonus episodes for Patreon tend to be more loose, I didn't really care how little they talked about this forgettable movie. Keep on Two Friending, Two Friends.

Is Juliette Lewis’s name even mentioned? This really is a disaster of an episode. It’s not a great movie, but some attempt to engage with it would have been nice. You barely mention ANY scenes. I seem to remember the initial kidnap and subsequent car chase being interestingly staged, why not talk about that a bit?

Really appreciated Griffin and David’s thoughts/vent session about the current state of the world at the end of the episode. While I have definitely been going back to listen to fun comfort food episodes I also really find it therapeutic that I’m not the only one feeling generally very hopeless. Hang in there blankies 💜
