I think the bit people miss is that the bioweapon the engineers were making wasn't the alien/xenomorph, it was some kind of DNA destroying black goo thing. But since Holloway slept with Shaw while he was infected with the black goo, it was then impregnated into Shaw, thus creating the alien/xenomorph (or proto-xenomorph technically).

This movie requires the audience to do all the heavy lifting, as evidenced by all the “people went to parties during Covid” justifications. 🙄 Ridley Scott can make the pictures pretty but he doesn’t know how to tell a good script from a bad one and he doesn’t know how to effectively dramatize his ideas (which he has been repeating to diminishing returns for the last 40 years). Bad movie. Bad commentary.

As a fan of the Alien franchise since I was a small child (thanks, mom?) I loved Prometheus when it came out and I've always been a defender of it. If I had started listening to this podcast a few years earlier, this post would have been an amazing gift on my 30th birthday that was skipped over thanks to Covid, but instead it's made my day today <3

There is already life on that planet as evidenced by the tundra and grass, so it seems like they're adding their DNA to a planet full of life that somehow produces us? To be honest, though, I doubt there was much thought given to the actual mechanics. Ridley seems to not understand much about science.

Finally listened to this and David's love for this movie seems to come from a much better that he has written in his head that actually has themes and ideas. And Griffin's defense against people's (legitimate IMO) issues with character behaviour seems to just be," people are going to parties during a pandemic."

It’s never a super fun listen when Griffin gets hung up on some movie take he disagrees with. I don’t care about cinema sins! The hosts don’t seem to either! Why can’t we just ignore all the lazy takes and have fun on our own terms?

I dip a toe into CinemaSins from time to time and I always appreciate when the “Prometheus School of running away from things” is invoked. I struggle with how cavalierly Idris decides to ram the engineer’s vessel (maybe he’d been stuck in 2020 too long) but otherwise I enjoy Prometheus quite a bit. One of the few R-rated movies that made its way into family movie night.🍿

I wonder if David has watched Raised By Wolves since it's basically Prometheus The Series. It's wildly convoluted and concerned with science vs. religion, has space worms, and, of course, milk-based robots.
