The more I think about The Santa Clause universe (a truly chilling way to begin a sentence), the more I think that there's a recurring theme of technological anxiety running through the whole thing. Reading between the lines of the first movie, the elves clearly had a lot of ideas about incorporating modern tech into the Santa approach that Santa had been resisting until he died, and they took advantage of the 1-year power vacuum at the North Pole (and Scott Calvin's clear disinterest in the job) to push through a lot of those ideas: jetpack sled, cookie dispenser, fireproof suit, etc. The movie even lightly makes fun of it, showing how none of these innovations solve the problem that killed the last Santa (though this reading also implies that the elves *want* Santa to periodically die so that they can make whatever improvements the previous Santa was resisting). In the second movie, the elves have clearly taken this techno-innovation and run with it, as the new Santa is a 90s dad played by an actor who is famous for liking dangerous/bizarre gadgets, and they overreach with the mecha-Santa. Fortunately, Santa saves the day and restores order, and there is the suggestion that he will take more active leadership while Mrs. Claus teaches the elves to be more responsible in their application of technology. This false hope is undermined by the third entry, which I won't get into in too much detail here--suffice it to say that the sort of technocratic, corporate vision the elves have for Santa again falls into the wrong hands, and we're treated to a glimpse of the sort of North Pole where all this inevitably leads. The three films together make a sort of doomed triptych about the inevitable encroachment of techno-corporate America onto the Christmas spirit, and suggest that, while resistance in individual moments is possible, the assimilation is inevitable. In short, damn you for making me think about these movies this much, Blank Check.

It was a little shocking to me how much worse this movie was than I remembered. I think I had blocked out everything but the scenes with Elizabeth Mitchell, who obviously should have been nominated for an Oscar and a Nobel Peace Prize. Still, A+ episode, everyone. I laughed a lot. When it comes to BlankCheck doing episodes on shitty movies, this was much preferable than listening to your life essence drain away as you watched Crocodile Dundee 2.

Not sure this of interest to anyone, but the French titles are a play on words. Santa is 'Père Noël' (Father Christmas) so HyperNoel is pronounced Hy-Père Noël. Get it? French titles are lame. Also, there's a distinction between super and hyper in general terms. A regular city market would be a 'supermarket' while a big surface store like Costco would be a 'hypermarket.' So the sequel is sizing up. Get it? Anyway, there's your pedantic French minute.
