Should’ve been a sequel. It feels like a fake sequel sketch especially with Ghostbusters making cameos. Wig and McCarthy are just plain bad. McKinnon and Jones are perfect.

Also, I love this pod. I obviously love it enough to pay on Patreon and listen to these. But David’s constant focus on Lunch during the Special Features is getting a bit old. Griffin can sometimes go on too long x but insider-baseball exposition on the development of the film is key.
Tyler Duggan
Grif is 100% correct, 6.5/10. Not a bad movie. Could’ve been the actual sequel instead of GBII, and this would have been just fine.
Kerry Benton
I'm not sure it holds up, even over just 12 years, but i sure did laugh my ass off at the time. And if nothing else, it's got Lizzy Caplan in it, and she always rules.

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed this movie and all the absolutely stellar funny ladies in it — really appreciate the gravitas the BC boys are taking in their approach to commenting on it! Cheers

I side with Griffin on this one. I had a fun time seeing this in theaters and have rewatched it a few times in the intervening years. It sucks that shitty dudes have made this movie so radioactive! It's a fun, harmless gentleman's 6!
Allison Hrabar
Sorry about the audition but Scream 4 is good! Worth watching!!
Billnetherlands
We need a Scream movie with Griffin, just sayin'
Sam Russell
It's easy to forget there's a whole generation that isn't relentlessly spamming their opinions online yet. It'll be interesting to see how films like this get reevaluated as the kids who grew up with them gain more of a voice in pop culture.

Hot tub time machine is awesome, nothing “failed” about it

Eating on mic right off the bat? Pass.

Totally. The new one was fine, but Scream 4 was a lot more fun.

A lot of the commentary is making me realize that one of the biggest problems this movie has is just too many cooks in the kitchen. They're very good cooks making food I like, but it doesn't all go together well and there's too much of it. It probably didn't help that Sony was putting a lot behind this movie, and Feig was a guy who had had a lot of success in open collaboration, and very little success in fighting studio executives. But it leads to this unwieldy movie where Griffin and David are constantly saying, "see, it would've been promising to build on that," only for the movie to go off in like 8 other directions. And then cutting down the theatrical version didn't favor one direction so much as it just made all 8 directions even less comprehensible. The saving grace is that it's filled with people who are good at being funny, and as a result it's pretty funny.

This is the only Ghostbusters movie that I like. Never saw the theatrical cut. Now I'm wondering if this movie would have a better rep if the extended cut was the only cut.
Anthony Regina
Also Kate McKinnon is a wonderful treat in this movie.
James Asmus
Also - fwiw, we've shown my 8yr old and 4yr old all the Ghostbusters movie, and this is their favorite. So they're doing something right, if not on the wavelength of OG fans. (And they hate the new one)
James Asmus
Honest, level-headed, and totally fair mixed-bag criticism? This is the rarity in finally got me to put some support bucks into the Patreon. <3

Cunt is the best swear word.
Anthony Regina
This is a funny movie!
Sam Russell
David has been saying cunt a lot lately and I think it’s good.

The new logo is great but uhhhh why does David the Dog look like he's going out for Halloween with Justin Trudeau?
Sofia Car
what was the subway mosaic david mentioned? i scrubbed back to try and find it but i cant seem to

Love the new logo! But can you upload a higher res version on itunes? I can count the pixels lol
Lauren Damon
I love this movie (though I prefer the shorter cut, is that a hot take?), thanks so much for this commentary
Hope
I know im in the minority on this, but this is my favourite Ghostbusters movie. Its got a weird stoner hangout energy and the characters just riffing with one another really work for me
Luke McGlynn
It really isn’t.

This might be a stupid question but is Lesley Jones' character supposed to know that the dragon creature is on her shoulders? I assumed that the joke was that she did and was pretending it wasn't there but also recall this not being clear and wondered if the gag was that she didn't now it was there?
Nate Shu
Finally, Blank Check covers a movie I'm in! I'm an extra in the Ozzy Osbourne scene and spent all summer hanging around the set in Boston

This movie is as bad, or more accurately, average, as Ghostbusters II. That has nothing to do with the gender of the cast, just as it doesn't with II and more to do with the fact that Ghostbusters really was lightening in a bottle and any attempts to replicate it are futile. MIB and Tremors do manage to recreate a similar composite of Sci-Fi/Action and Comedy, not seen any of the sequels to either but I imagine those just prove that those films are also not replicable.

Man... nothing gets me more amped than seeing "Movie starts at...28:40" in the show notes.

Appreciate all the extra 'text (that's short for context) at the beginning. I unironically love this movie, and it's definitely one of the better sci-fi/fantasy action comedies of our generation. EDIT: Also I used to work at a comic store attached to a comedy club (podcast nerds probably know) and one time Neil Casey was there to see his wife performing, and I tried to subtly engage about Ghostbusters without being too aggressive and he was not having it. But I was not a hater then and I am not now!

Honestly thanks for this episode and conversation. My daughter was 8 when it came out and loved it and still watches it. The weirdo incel energy surrounding the movie is disheartening.

leslie jones rules in this, just how it is
