I know I'm way late to this, and I'll preface this by saying that I have no problem with the story/characters of this movie, but they mention the complaints about the look and fight scenes of the film (backed up by David asking if motion smoothing was still on), but griffin very quickly mentions Lana's apathy toward story boards and preference for actors making blocking choices (requiring lots of lighting) , and that is what it really boils down to why I think a lot of people (me included) didn't really like WATCHING the movie. I think it looks bad. And maybe if it was an original movie that isn't being compared to some of the most visually inventive and meticulously story boarded films of all time, I would enjoy it, but it's not, so I don't. I'm no hater, the story works, it's just impossible to not compare the visuals.

I think this movie is great. The effects and fights are arguably not as good as the original trilogy, but the emotional level, particularly the Neo-Trinity romance, works better for me.

In the main feed episode of for this movie, Griffin referred to the scene where all the new-Matrix people are mind controlled into jumping off the buildings to attack Neo and Trinity as "its like getting swarmed with @ replies" While I think thats a really good interpretation, this scene to me seemed the most pointed reference to the actual dangers of the algorithm-controlled internet that this movie is criticizing. The Analyst has created a Matrix where everything feels awful all the time. Everyone is anxious, upset, and angry. Nobody is given the time they need to think and process anything, because there is always something new being pushed down their throats. It all seems very precise. But then of course when the system is threatened, it doesn't fight back itself in a controlled manner like the agents of the previous Matrix . Instead it uses the very bodies of the people it controls as these crude and horrific weapons. To me this seemed like a 1:1 comparison for internet radicalization.

I've never seen Elmo in Grouchland, but in following your question, I just searched "Mandy Patinkin villain" and he plays a villain in that. He could be paired with Vanessa Williams as the Queen of Trash, who doesn't seem to be a villain as much as an obstacle and fever dream of Produer Ben. Not a bad pair of singers. But it's also a musical.
