Got a 15 in the UK. So did Venom. Yet we got Beowulf as a 12A (decapitations, blood, oral, blood, mutilations) makes no sense. I think some films just get a higher rating in league with studios to cater to certain age demographics outside of domestic markets.

Re nc 17 and why that age - the voting age was lowered to 18 when people realized you could be drafted at 18, so the MPaa probably figured if you can be sent to Vietnam you should be able to see apocalypse now in the theatre. So that’s why that age - I think.

I also thought the theaters were overreacting by banning the Gentleminions until I listened to Paul Rust talking about how he almost cried when he went to see it with his daughter and had to leave midpoint because they were throwing popcorn and spitting soda on him. Not cool.

I feel like they missed the point that the vengeance button at the end is not that Batman learns that he is "too scary." Bruce learns that while vengeance might feel good personally for him to exorcise his demons, it cannot save a city which is his actual goal. Vengeance is a raw power that can be corrupted vs. hope which is the better tool.

What a boring movie. Vibes aren’t enough to justify a three hour runtime. Commentary is whatever. Extended tangents on Minions, etc… just emphasize how uninteresting the actual story is. This movie is all sizzle, no steak. And more eating on mic 🙄

I get it, “it’s too long”, they’re tired of Batman movies, they seem to like Nolan’s take better, etc. but I would have liked them to actually talk about what is happening in the movie instead of filling time with more tangents than usual.

A long movie, but much like Fincher, a weirdly comforting slice of dreary decay, though far less precise than his tightly wound Hitchcockian best. Love Glasgow as Gotham. My favorite Gotham yet. Pattinson was great crawling out of his skin as Bruce Wayne. Zoe Kravitz was subdued but convincing. The movie is not a mess, but it’s messy, if that makes sense. I don’t mind the length, but it does feel a little rudderless by the third act.

I feel like a limitation on this movie and most (or all?) Batman joints, is that our familiarity with the character and surrounding iconography is so extreme that these movies can only really be “about Batman.” Like this idea of, “ah, this one gets that he’s an awkward weirdo” or “this one gets why Batman is X or Y or Z” or Lego Batman’s whole shtick, it’s all so insular and self reflexive and a little lifeless.

Guys, there’s another classic “taking off Batman’s mask” scene you’ve forgotten. In the first Burton film, the Joker’s gang briefly has the drop on him, and they lift up his mask for a second which allows Vicki Vale to snap a photo before he jumps back up and beats them up. This in turn I guess justifies Batman kidnapping and roofie-ing her to get the film back from under her blouse. It also has the classic line, “Check his wallet”, which means these goons thought Batman would leave the house with, what, a few bucks and a Sam’s Club card just in case?

I gotta single out how much I love the “I Have But One Heart” needle drop in Turturro’s penthouse. If you’re gonna reference an established masterpiece to amp up a new movie, I think that’s such a fun way, which I realize is partly cause I’m such a sucker for tonally ironic needle drops that I really like the craft of doing a *diegetic* tonally ironic needle drop haha
