Skip this if you don't wanna learn too much about hail and sleet. Hail is formed when water droplets rise up very high in the cloud and freeze and then fall back down again. Then depending on the strength of the updraft they may do this many more times getting bigger each time. You can cut open hail and see the layers sometimes like rings in a tree. For this reason hail needs a very strong thunderstorm and happens almost exclusively in the summer and often alongside tornados. What you guys were referring to happening in NYC and London in the winter/springtime is actually called sleet! Sleet works the other way and occurs when the air is warmer up where the clouds are but then freezes on its way down to earth.
