Fucking goddamn 80s babies. I have no beef with Blade Runner as a movie, it’s great and all, but of COURSE the one with the 80s video store stalwart is running the table. Gen Xers are as insufferable with their movies as boomers are with classic rock. So many great movies with tons of tangent potential left behind here because everyone wants to hear more Blade Runner. At least Scanner Darkly will be fun.

It breaks my heart to lose Elmore Leonard but Blade Runner was a total revelation to me. I saw it in the theater when it the first came out in 1982. I was 14 and immediately the worlds vision of the future was changed forever. I watched its echoes ripple for the last 40 years. The only filmography that was higher on my list was Kubrick.

Love Elmore Leonard but PKD is maybe my favorite author of all time; having said that, the pain:pleasure ratio in the PKD film series is worse. One all-time masterpiece, one pretty great Linklater, and then huboieeee. Only one stinkeroo in the Leonard set, one high masterpiece (JB) and 2 fun ones.

since PDK is in the lead, i will say - i think it would be really fun to revisit the two Dicks covered back in 2017 (maybe in favor of BR2049, which is technically not Dick). it's been a while, and these would be guestless - they're also both great commentary fodder. if BR is gonna get double dipped one day with David's long-desired Ridley series, i think it'd be fine for these to be revisited too.

To be honest, I feel like voting for either of these won't matter because I hope that no matter who wins it loses in the next round. If I had to choose though...PDK would cover more directors that I would love to see covered separately in huge mainfeed series (covering either Blade Runner movies for either Sir Ridley or Denis would be classic blank check material, and a Linklater conversation on rotoscoping with his other works in the mix would be very cool) so I'm going with Elmore bc I don't mind potentially doing another Sonnenfeld at this point (which I feel like means he won't ever be covered on the mainfeed) and covering only one Tarantino or Soderbergh each here
