🕑 Added 2023-10-11 04:00:03 +0000 UTCHeh heh. We’re like watching music videos directed by some buttmunch named David Fincher? YES thats right, Beavis and Buttheads, for October’s bonus ep the gang presents commentary of 30 different video selections spanning the entirety of da Finchman’s career as a music video director. Topics include: Christopher Cross' 1981 Grammy sweep, why Bamboléo hits different, too much Billy Idol, the tiniest desk concerts, pondering if its funnier when Glick says it and so much more!

two of the vids aren't available in my current location, the wonderous and wildly remote territory known as "ca-na-da". Obv none of this has to do with you guys, I just wanted, for the thousandth time to say the way media copyright laws work between US and Canada is fucking stupid, the concerned parties should be forced to figure out the minutia of compensation and contracts behind the scenes so the rest of us dont have to deal with it.

Retroactively screaming HARPER SIMON into the void.

Nine Inch Nails is the best band still performing on the planet, this will be amended if The Talking Heads ever reunite. suit & tie is the last decent Justin Timberlake track, his "comedy" is terrible

Hi all, new member here. I've listened to the main feed for quite some time now. Came to check out the Patreon and when I saw this episode I signed up right away. This was a great idea for a show's topic. Keep up the creativity. I love the show and now, after all this time, I'm more than happy to show my support. Thanks guys, keep it up!

4:44 was a big deal
Korey Freeman
We had The Box in the US

I don’t think I’ve ever commented on anything ever but - does Ben ever finish his Mink DeVille anecdote??? Love Mink DeVille, love Ben, felt like his story had real heat and my man got RAILROADED

Winning Time is incredible. What an L take from Griffin. One of the best shows I've ever seen. I'm not a basketball fan at all but it had me fully engrossed
Jonathan Bryan
I loved the role reversal at the end, where David is all manic and endlessly pursuing tangents, while Griffin is exasperated and desperately tries to end the episode. Classic!
Anthony Regina
The energy of this episode is so chaotic.
FrancescoTakesItEasy
Never liked Beavis & Butthead, but Daria is very likely my favorite animated show of all time. I watch all of it, like, every other year.
Jon Arnold
For some reason my podcast app is having trouble downloading this episode. I even re-added the feed and now it’s just gone from the feed!

Please stop with the nostalgia. It is a toxic impulse. MTV barely played music and when they did they played the same 20 artists. Music videos are viewed now more than ever before and there’s virtually no barrier to mass distribution or audience engagement. You would trade that for David Fincher to direct another $15 million dollar Madonna video that nobody can watch?
Tony Jennaway
He fairly recently referenced Going Underground (The Jam), which I know being half English and whatnot shouldn’t be very surprising, but still impressive. ✌️
Tyler Duggan
Honestly, there’s enough directors who did music videos that they could easily have these. I also would love shorts, if they ever do someone like Wes Anderson or Stevey Sodey

This just might be my favorite Blank Check episode ever. Please consider making another ep like this just with music videos you like
Jordan Gibson
Best part of this is poor Ben trying to be helpful and realizing all his filler songs are awful
Mike Ostrov
Honestly, the rolling stones are underrated. I don't count the same 5 songs being played on classic rock radio for 40 years as rating -- that's just overexposure and lazy corporate DJs.
Tyler Duggan
I’m gonna pause this and come back to it. 4am is too early (read: late?) for Griffin’s rambling. Love this guy, genuinely, but oh lord. Also, Patreon folx don’t get any David Sims shirtless pics? What are we even paying for?
Philip Ehlke
The tidbit about Rick Springfield being an avid Star Wars collector is just an absolute gem. I’m sure I’ve heard it before but in this case I love how Rick’s passion might have influenced Fincher’s style like the lead domino on the path to Alien 3

I like Griffin asking Marie about the Grammy nominees like she remembers things like they do.
fartinscorcese
“That feel when they say ‘Bomboleo’” killed my ass
Rob Farnham
Betsy Lynn George, lead of the Billy Idol "Cradle of Love" video, makes her triumphant return to Blank Check! (She had a small part in "Point Break")
FiddlersGreenDay
Yeah talking about how the first sound of the album is a helicopter. Love that song.

Nice KMFDM pull David! My sister played me Closer when it came out and I've never been the same since.
Austin McDougle
KMFDM kicks ass, David consistently proving he has the best music taste. I remember he defended Be Here Now once, that’s a good take too
Dan Johnson
Was it? I don't feel like their music taste is any snobbier than movie taste.
Austin McDougle
everytime they’d say “THIS IS THE BEST” I’d be anticipating George Michael but they kept giving Madonna
Austin McDougle
I don’t really like The Doors but hating on them is a super millennial trait.

I'm glad Griffin mentioned the Vinyl cape Jawa. I have one, and I remember a kid was trying to get me to trade it to him in middle school. Still got it!

2 Madonna takeaways…1: I never really appreciated how fantastic her music and videos were (her videos were the true highlight of this collection) 2: That image of her dead mother’s mouth sewn shut really is one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen

My music nepotism proposals: Miley Cyrus, Willow Smith.

Marie is 100% right about Justin Timberlake’s acting. Love him and NSYNC til I die, but it’s a hard pass on him as an actor.
Sarah Palmer
I appreciate all the Madonna love.
Don Knott Steiner
Well the weirdo smelling other people in the bathroom saved this.

This was a very snobbish music episode. I don’t know if I want to hear something like this again.

Wow Michael Bay really really loved the L.A. Woman video when he was following around Fincher didn't he?
Eric Morris

NYC did have The Box. It was probably only certain cable providers (and not everyone even had cable at all at this point), but it was a channel. "Ice Ice Baby" was the only thing that got played for months
Douglas Wykstra
Yes! I feel about Mark Knopfler the way the Achewood gang feels about Chris Isaak. "Man, listen to how nice all his guitar notes are." I respect him for finding the ZZ Top-esque overdriven guitar tone in "Money for Nothing," but the true joy of Dire Straits is listening to a guy with jazz-guitar chops play rock 'n roll (though the rowdy young boys dressed in their best brown baggies and platform soles might disagree).
Douglas Wykstra
Ben discovering that Billy Idol's "Cradle of Love" video was followed by Billy Idol's "L.A. Woman" video very much reminded me of, "Next up, an encore showing of 'Daddy's Boy.' No! You promised!"
Dean Carrano
Bourgeois Tagg was named after founding members Brent Bourgeois and Larry Tagg

3 in Australia. Rick Springfield can be found, but now I'm off to search the rest of the internet for Loverboy's Notorious!

loll the lack of dire straits knowledge was rough

Jermaine Stewart 🖤

The Toy Story 2 bit was incredibly funny. Its the most outwardly aggro I have ever heard Griffin. Love it.
Charlie
Judith absolutely slaps though

I love Dire Straits, will die on the hill that Mark Knoplfer is a top 10 guitarist of the past 50 years, and totally understand if people have no time for them. They have a cilantro sound. Self-titled debut is a good place to start. Fun album, Down to the Waterline is a very confident debut opener, Sultans of Swing is committed to the sausage asylum for being a crazy banger, and Wild West End is a more than adequate wanna-be-Dylan romp. But it’s all twang all the time. If you like that you’ll probably like the rest. Except for Love over Gold. No one has ever heard that album, it’s weird, completely non-existent. Making Movies is perfect though, no notes

Missed out on Foreigner's Say You Will which I might describe as having the look of a 4 minute Black & White perfume ad.
